The 5th International Summer School on "Social Representations and Communication" will be held in Rome, Italyfrom June 5th to 11th, 1999. 
Rome is currently undergoing some exciting changes in view of the Jubilee Year which is coming up in 2000. Major rebuilding work is going on in the city aimed at restoring historic buildings and creating new artistic areas for cultural events. The climate is mild and sunny, the average summer temperature being 25-28°C. 
The location of the 5th International Summer School on "Social Representations and Communication" is the University of Rome "La Sapienza", the largest University in Europe. Participants will be welcomed by the University Rector in the Aula Magna during the opening session of the International Summer School dedicated to the development of post-graduate curricula and the official introduction to the European Ph.D. on Social Representations and Communication. 
The residential venue for both teaching staff and participants is located in the centre of the capital in the elegant Parioli district. It is a "green" area with sports facilities and parking, close to the magnificent Villa Ada park, not far from the University and very well connected to the Rome historic centre, Termini railway station and Fiumicino airport. Details of accommodation and of how to get to the venue will be sent with the letter of acceptance.

Like the previous scientific events, the 5th International Summer School on "Social Representations and Communication" is organised by prof. Annamaria Silvana de Rosa, scientific co-ordinator of the European PhD on Social Representations and Communication, activated within the ICP-3074/14 ERASMUS network of 13 participating Universities.

The annual International Summer School on "Social Representations and Communication" is the most intensive didactic stage for participants in the European PhD on Social Representations and Communication. Its new advanced curriculum has been approved by DGXXII SOCRATES and formally recognised by the University of Rome "La Sapienza", Helsinki University and I.S.C.T.E. in Lisbon. It is supported by Erasmus-Socrates, the Maison des Sciences de l'Homme in Paris and the EuroPACE network, which deals with telematic applications for open distance learning. 
In accordance with the main purposes of both the T.M.R. and SOCRATES programmes co-ordinated by the University of Rome "La Sapienza" - approved by the DGXII (contract no. ERBFMMACT 960165) and by DGXXII (IC 29415-IC-1-98-IT-ERASMUS-1) - the 5th International Summer School aims to promote the European dimension of higher education by offering academic research training in an international setting. It is characterised by intensive formal and informal exchanges between teachers from different European scientific laboratories and a small number of PhD students and young researchers from different countries, some from outside Europe.

1. to give participants the chance to deepen their knowledge of the theory, methodology and application of the Social Representations paradigm, working with people from other Universities in a multinational setting and availing themselves of the experiences of an international team of experts in their particular field of study
2. to involve participants in different learning sessions so that they are not merely "onlookers" but drawn in to the learning method, sharing what they have learned from training in their native land
3. to monitor the advanced training of the EU PhD students - principally by training through research and trans-national mobility and co-operation - and develop joint criteria of evaluation which can gradually set "European standards" for and beyond research
4. to take advantage of the meeting of invited experts to enrich teaching methods in the international arena; as teachers of a sort of "extended European Faculty" the teaching team will be encouraged to meet for a "joint didactic exchange" with a new generation of researchers from different nations

The 5th International Summer School on "Social Representations and Communication" will develop the successful intensive programmes of the 1995 summer school on "Everyday thinking, Social Representations and Communication" held in Finland (Lahti), the 1996 summer school on "Multiple strategies in the investigation of Social Representations" held in France (Aix-en-Provence), the 1997 summer school on "Social Representation Theory: historical roots, articulation and development" held in Portugal (Lisbon) and the 1998 summer school on "The theory towards applications" held in the Spain-Basque country (San Sebastian). 
In line with the long term planning for the summer schools, the 5th International Summer School, entitled "Developing European Doctoral Training", will be dedicated to the presentation of research reports by Eu PhD students enrolled in the European doctoral programme on Social Representations and Communication, like an intermediate step in view of the final evaluation. 
The opening plenary session, entitled "Building European Post-graduate Curricula: scientific, administrative and institutional implications", aims to address the above issue in a practical way from several points of view (scientific, administrative and institutional). The session, introduced by the Rector and representatives of the University of Rome "La Sapienza", will include contributions by the Rectors of other European Universities participating in the European PhD on Social Representations and Communication, the Heads of Units of the European Commission DGXII (T.M.R.) and DGXXII (Socrates), the Head of the Maison des Sciences de l'Homme de Paris. It will be concluded by the Italian Minister of the University and Scientific research. 
The scientific structure of the 5th International Summer School is expected to be as follows:

EARLY MORNING SESSIONS

These will be organised in parallel workshops focussing on three main areas relating to the current projects of young researchers enrolled in the EU PhD programme. The workshops, which will be introduced by the two tutors responsible for co-ordination, will be dedicated to illustrations of research projects by young researchers. The young researchers are expected to prepare their reports in English (in short article or brief research report format ready for submission to an international journal) to be sent to tutors before the summer school (no later than the end of April). As well as the young researchers enrolled in the PhD programme, a limited number of participants may attend the workshops on the basis of an order of ranking of their choice.

LATE MORNING SESSIONS

These will involve open discussion within the parallel working groups of the research reports illustrated in the early morning sessions. Discussion will be led by the two tutors, who will co-ordinate the workshops. Other EU PhD tutors belonging to the network and invited members of the teaching staff, who attend these sessions as external experts, are also expected to contribute to the discussion, together with the other summer school participants. 
At the end of the session the tutors will be asked to summarise the key points arising during the discussion in a list of questions to the EU PhD researchers aimed at improving their research reports.

EARLY AFTERNOON SESSIONS

These will be informal meetings between participants and teaching staff providing an opportunity for individual tutoring for EU Ph.D. young researchers and mutual knowledge-sharing.

LATE AFTERNOON SESSIONS

These will involve round-table discussions focussing on one of the crucial issues relating to the three parallel thematic workshops. These round tables will involve all the tutors from the EU PhD network plus external experts invited ad hoc.There will be a special training session on the didactic use of the internet site of the EU PhD on Social representations and Communication. It will look particularly at the section on the meta-analysis of the literature on social representations, introduced by the scientific co-ordinator of the EU PhD programme.

EVENING SESSIONS

These will be keynote lectures presented in plenary session by leading international experts focussing on crucial theoretical and methodological topics of general interest for the development of research on Social Representations. They will be closely linked to the fields addressed in the workshops and round tables held during the previous session.There will be dedicated meetings between EU PhD young researchers and their national and foreign tutors and the representative members of the European PhD executive Committee including the programme director and co-ordinator

They are all known experts in the area and will include the founder of the theory of Social representations, Serge Moscovici.

The level of the summer school will be "specialised" rather than "basic". Contents will not deal with elements already noted in theory but will give greater emphasis to meta-theoretical, methodological and applied aspects necessary for the formation of the "how" and "why" of the research.

1. European PhD students 
   Students enrolled in the European PhD programme in 1996-97, 1997-98 or 1998-99.

Selection of applicants ? both for the EU Ph.D. and the 5th International Summer School - will be carried out by the EU PhD executive committee, comprising the programme director, the co-ordinator and the two representatives from the University of Helsinki and the I.S.C.T.E., who, besides the University of Rome ?La Sapienza?, have recognised the EU PhD on S.R. & C.

Expenses are available on the following terms:

Available for item expenses of general interest (selection and co-ordinating meeting, didactic materials, technical equipment and O.D.L., EU PhD teaching staff travel and accommodation costs, administrative costs, etc.)

Mainly available for:

• publicity of the event, venue hire, simultaneous translation during the opening session, etc.;
• registration fee and travel costs for participating in the 5th Summer School for the students enrolled in the 1st, 2nd or 3rd year of the EU PhD eligible for T.M.R. funding;
• registration fee and travel costs or participating in the 5th Summer School for students accepted onto the EU PhD for 1999-2000, eligible for T.M.R. funding. 
  If none of the new candidates are accepted as participants in the EU PhD for 1999-2000, other summer school applicants (in the condition to apply for T.M.R. funding) will be considered for some financial support.
• 50% travel and accommodation costs for the invited experts not belonging to the EU Ph.D. network eligible for T.M.R. funding.

These are available for expenses not allowed by the above conditions (50% travel and accommodation costs for the invited experts not belonging to the EU Ph.D. network eligible for T.M.R. funding, coffee break, social events, gadgets, etc.)

730 EURO (bank expenses included) for the scientific and accommodation fee for all participants, including those living in Italy. 
The registration fee for students regularly enrolled in the EU PhD for 1999-2000 will be funded by T.M.R. if they are eligible on the basis of the contract (see conditions for T.M.R support applications). 
Breakfast, lunch, accommodation, social event (as indicated in the detailed programme) will be supported by the financial funds provided by the organisers. 
Only for the participants, residents in Rome, who do not need accommodation, the registration fee is reduced to 500 EURO (bank expenses included) and it will not cover living expenses.

No application will be accepted without the information requested below. 
When they send their application, applicants are requested to provide information about the account to which they authorise the scientific fee to be charged. The registration fee is the equivalent in Italian lire of 730 EURO for participation in the international summer school and the equivalent in Italian lire of 1000 EURO (bank expenses not included) for enrolment in the 1999-2000 Eu Ph.D. programme.

The T.M.R support (contract n. ERB4064PL9600005) is limited to candidates admitted to the EU Ph.D. programme who are: 
1) citizens of the EU and associated countries (Norway, Liechtenstein , Iceland and Israel). Researchers who are not nationals of a Member States of the Community may be selected by the committee as participants in the Summer School, but they cannot apply for T.M.R. support; 
2) researchers aged under 35 or under (researchers whose place of work is in a less-favoured region of the EU, women researchers and researchers who work in industry are specific target groups for T.M.R.). 
Researchers over 35 may be selected by the committee as participants in the Summer School, but they cannot apply for T.M.R. support. 
The expenses relating to the participation in the Summer School of the young researchers aged 35 years or under and citizens of the EU shall comprise only certain costs of travel (the cheapest economy class air fare or second class train fare or bus from the researcher's place of work), accommodation (including food and lodging, but excluding telephone calls and other extras) and participation fee (fee no higher than fees charged to other participants). 
Speakers' fees, meeting for selecting the applicants and social events are not to be considered as allowable costs under T.M.R. In order to keep registration fees, the teachers will not be paid for their scientific contribution. 
T.M.R. can provide up to 50% of the cost of travel and accommodation related to the participation of the invited speakers (category B) and financial support to some of the selected young researchers and post-graduate students (category A). With respect to Young Researchers, the T.M.R. contract states :
