The third Summer School on "Social Representations and Communication" will be held in Lisbon, Portugal (6-15 September 1997). It is organized by Jorge Jesuino and Annamaria Silvana de Rosa, co-ordinator of the European PhD on Social Representations and Communication, activated within the ICP-3074/14 ERASMUS network of 13 University-partnerships. The Euro PhD on S.R. & C. is formally acknowledged by "La Sapienza" University of Rome, Helsinki University and I.S.C.T.E.in Lisbon, and it is supported not only by Erasmus-Socrates, but also by Maison des Sciences de l'Homme of Paris and EuroPACE network, concerning telematic applications for open distance learning.
The success of the first and the second Summer Schools, organized by Annamaria Silvana de Rosa in Finland (Lathi, August-September 1995) in co-operation with Klaus Helkama and the efficient assistance of Anna Maija Pirttila-Backman, and in France (Aix-en-Provence, September 1996) with Jean Claude Abric, was due to the active involvement of the participants coming from different countries all over the world and to the stimulating participation of the invited teachers (Alain Clemence, Willem Doise, Gerard Duveen, Rob Farr, Claude Flament, Serge Moscovici, Jorge Jesuino, Denise Jodelet, Marco Perugini, Max Reneirt, Pierre Vergés, Wolfgang Wagner, besides the organisers). These results encourage us to continue on this way and to realise three year-period Summer Schools according to the scientific programme approved by the DGXII of E.U. within T.M.R. (Training and Mobility Researchers).
The general aim of the series of related Summer Schools on 'Social Representations and Communication' over a three year period is to create the opportunity of an intensive international stage for students and teachers from different countries, in order to:

offer the participants the possibility of working with people from other Universities and countries and deepening, in a multi-national setting, their study of the Social Representation's paradigm seen from the point of view of theory, methodology and application, availing themselves of the noteworthy diverse experiences and the international team of experts in their particular field of study. Taking advantage of the special competencies of various teachers, the participants may indeed enter into contact in a wider and deeper manner with the many facets of the Social Representation paradigm;

start up and involve the participants in different sessions of learning, so that they may not be simply "onlookers", but be drawn into the method of learning, sharing what they have learned from their academic training in their native land;

monitor the advanced training of the Euro PhD students - basically realised by means of training through research and trans-national mobility and co-operation - and develop joint criteria of evaluation, which step by step can set "European standards" "to" and "beyond " research;

finally, take advantage of the opportunity of co-operation among the various invited experts with the ultimate goal of enriching their methods of teaching in the international arena. Dealing with a new academic reality and acting as teachers of a sort of an "extended European Faculty", the teaching team, even though it has great experience of several scientific meetings among experts (international conferences), will be challenged to come together for a "joint didactic exchange" with a new generation of researchers from various nations. In accordance with the main purposes of T.M.R. and SOCRATES programmes, the Third Summer School is aimed at promoting the European dimension of higher education, by offering a possibility of training for academic research in an international setting, characterised by intensive formal and informal exchanges between teachers, coming from different European academic laboratories, and a small number of PhD students from different countries.
The structure of the courses is envisaged in the following manner:
Plenary morning sessions focused on crucial theoretical topics presented by the invited experts, on inter- and intra- disciplinary conceptual links of Social Representations theory with other concepts and paradigms, and on a critical debate concerning the development of the theory itself.
Afternoon sessions on research projects presented by the Euro PhD students, in order to achieve a critical exchange between all the participants and the tutors, with great attention to the theoretical knots of the topics treated during the morning sessions. Presentation of the current research activities by the other participants according to a schedule planned in advance on the basis of their availability.
Evening informal meetings to allow exchange of mutual knowledge between participants as well as between participants and the training staff.
The course will be reserved to those who have already graduated, principally already chosen as " European PhD" students.
Whereas the first Summer School was mainly aimed at introducing the new class of researchers to this particular field of studies, and foresaw the development of an Intensive Programme of studies particularly addressed to the students involved in the ERASMUS project exchanges (ICP-3074/14), the third Summer School on Social Representations and Communication, like the second one, will be principally set apart for those who have been regularly attending the European PhD since 1996-1997 and to those who will be selected for 1997-1998 (See conditions for entrance application to the European PhD in the appropriate sheet).
Therefore the level of the courses will not be basic, but rather "specialised"; the contents will not deal with elements already noted in theory, but will give greater emphasis on meta-theoretical and methodological aspects necessary for the formation of the "how " and " wherefore" of the research.
Coherently with the three-year Euro PhD programme, the subject of this Summer School will be:
"Social Representation's Theory:
historical roots, articulations and development".The programme foresees the deepening of historical and theoretical aspects of the paradigm, with great attention first of all to the main ideas that shape the theory, and then to the different possible links between this paradigm and other paradigms or other theories connected with it.
There will be a deepening of awareness of theories connected to the paradigm, and various aspects thereof. To be well acquainted with the varied methods of research will help blend the theory of Social Representations with other constructs (such as attitude, ideology, image, schema, values, etc.) and theories of Social Psychology (such as social influence theory, social identity theory, social memory, analysis of discourse, etc.) and with other disciplines (in particularly sociology, anthropology, semiotics, mass communication, social history).
