 Virtual University

EUROPACE is a trans-European network of universities and their partners in education and training, i.e. private enterprises, regional and professional organisations and public authorities.

Approximately 60 member organisations (45 of them universities) participate in this network throughout Europe.

EuroPACE demonstrates and develops the potential of telematics for the European university of the future and thus contributes materially towards the realisation of the concept of lifelong learning & the creation of a Virtual University for Europe.

A series of seminars are organised in 2002 and 2003. These seminars have been set up to deliver state-of-the-art information on educational technologies to the members. At the same time EuroPACE will use the seminars to test different distance delivery models: videoconferencing, live streaming media, etc.

Europace developed a database learning materials for trainers. This database has originally been developed in the framework of the TIDE project - New Technologies, Training and Employability.

DG Education and Culture has launched a study on the usage of eLearning in continuing vocational training, particularly at the workplace, with emphasis on Small and Medium Enterprises (SME's). The aim of the study is to understand the barriers that could discourage SME's from using e-Learning and to better evaluate the advantadges e-Learning could bring to Small and Medium Enterprises.

Inside this program the Europace strategic partners are: ARIADNE, CETRA, EPYC, EUNITE and K. U. Leuven Audivisual Services.

The ARIADNE was created to exploit and further develop the results of the ARIADNE and ARIADNE II European Projects, which created tools and methodologies for producing, managing and reusing computer-based pedagogical elements and telematics supported training curricula.

CETRA is a centre for research and research training. The Centre is now integrating translation studies into telecommunications and telematics. CETRA is supported by the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, the Università degli Studi di Roma "La Sapienza", Università degli Studi di Urbino and by the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid (U.A.M.).

EPYC is a spin-off company of EuroPACE, K.U.Leuven and Gemma Frisius Fund K.U.Leuven. EPYC was created to bring the success of ICT-based education and training to a broader market by acting as an interface between the academic world and the industry.

EUNITE was initiated by a joint effort of EuroPACE and the Coimbra Group, following VirtUE (Virtual University for Europe) project (Ten Telecom) recommendations.

K.U.Leuven Audiovisual Services / eLINK (hosts the EuroPACE Headquarters) The Katholieke Universiteit Leuven is the oldest university of the Low Countries and the largest Flemish university.

EuroPACE was also the co-ordinator ot the c-EVU project (collaborative-European Virtual University) developed together a large number of the European partners, including the co-ordinator of the European PhD on Social Representations and Communication.

UNICA, the "Institutional Network of the UNIversities from the CApitals of Europe", is a network of 41 Universities from 32 capital cities of Europe, with a combined strength of over 130,000 staff and 1,500,000 students. It was founded in 1990 and is one of the five leading institutional academic inter-university networks in Europe. Its role is to promote academic excellence, integration and co-operation between member universities throughout Europe. It seeks also to be a driving force in the development of the Bologna process and to facilitate the integration of universities from Central and Eastern Europe into the European Higher Education Area.

UNICA has been welcoming new members from the new EU states and candidate countries over the last several years. Consequently, UNICA is acting as a guide and an incubator for these universities. The individual members bring a strong expertise and know-how in European co-operation in different fields such as Internationalization & Mobility, Education, Research & Development, Universities strategy & policy, and Link with Society. Many activities (meetings, conferences, European projects,…) and working groups are organized. We would like to draw attention to the UNICA PhD contact group and the 6th Bologna Laboratory that is hosted by the University of Lausanne (June 2007) and will focus on the Doctoral studies.

In consideration with the So.Re.Com project the UNICA network could play an active role in:

  • providing information related this issue about other PhD initiative running among the UNICA network, approved by UNICA under joint curriculum call etc
  • disseminating information, participate to conferences, inserting link on the UNICA web site and by the newsletter

Lusfona University

CICANT - Centre for Research in Applied Communication, Culture and New Technologies

The home institution for the Centre for Research in Applied Communication, Culture, and New Technologies (CICANT) is Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias - Communication and Information Sciences Department.

Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias is the largest non-public University in Portugal. The University name comes from the word “Lusofonia” which names all the Portuguese speaking countries and their common linguistic and cultural background. The university assumes itself as the leading institution responsible for the development of this geographical and cultural space with more than 200 million inhabitants.

With a student body of more than 9.000 students and 1000 teachers, the university offers a very rich environment, either in scientific as in social and cultural terms. The large amount of foreign students studying here, namely the ones from Brazil and Africa, adds a lot to the already very lively University ambient. The University big and well-equipped campus, is situated in the centre of Lisbon “University City” just a few minutes away from all the city main areas.

CICANT results from the combined efforts of all teachers in the Communication and Information Sciences Department towards the goal of creating an autonomous research unit which will allow for the integration and harnessing of all the research activities that until now had been carried out by these researchers in a dispersed and individual way. CICANT will promote theoretical and applied research on all its subject areas, particularly focusing on knowledge transfer and exchanges with the industry and similar centers in Portugal and in Europe.
