The mission of the School of Social Work is founded on the values of social justice and human rights that are essential to social work practice. In this perspective, the programmes of the school aim to provide future graduates with the conceptual tools and practices that will allow them to develop critical outlook and intervene in multidisciplinary settings and in increasingly diversified and complex contexts. The School of Social Work gives central consideration to the socio-cultural, political and economic contexts in which individual, family and collective problems are rooted. This perspective is present throughout the courses and research projects of professors, as well as in the coursework and research of students, and is considered a precondition in the construction of approaches to intervention, social policy and institutional programs and community actions that are close to the everyday lives of individuals and communities. The pedagogical approach privileged by the school, entered on intervention research and analysis, is a means of articulating these diverse issues and of bringing them to the fore in teaching, research and practicum.

The academic organization of the UAM is based on an innovative educational model called the Departmental Model. It was developed in 1974 as an alternative to the existing educational models then current in the country to which all schools and faculties fundamentally conformed. The Departmental Model makes it possible for the tasks of teaching, research, diffusion and cultural preservation be made in a harmonic and integral form. In addition, the organization of disciplinary research groups provides a natural way to approach problems with a high degree of complexity. From the beginning, the UAM defined its policy to maintain each one of their University Units to a maximum of 15,000 students. This decision responded to the need to guarantee students appropriate attention in the teaching program and security to offer them quality infrastructure in sufficient numbers: i.e., laboratories, technical shops, university computer centers, libraries and other services indispensable for the development of professional training. The UAM, has more than 45.000 students.
