During his Marie Curie fellowship dr. Nikos KALAMPALIKIS worked on the topic of his PhD, ‘Social Representations, Social Identity, Historical Memory: The Macedonian Case’, at the University of Rome “La Sapienza” in Italy, where he collected bibliographical material, specifically related to the topic of media communication, social memory, national identity and politics.

The collaboration between the fellow and his supervisor, Prof. Annamaria de Rosa, turned out very fruitful thanks to a common interest in National and Supra-national Identity and Social Memory. Indeed, the intellectual exchanges from which the grant holder benefited helped him in the progress of the treatment of the data at the level of the thesis, which he defended in November 2001.  In 2005 his thesis was published: Kalampalikis N. As Marie Curie Fellow, he participated in the 5th International Summer School on Social Representations and Communication - "Developing European Doctoral Training" (5th-11th June 1999, Rome, Italy) and also in the 7th International Summer School on Social Representations and Communication - "Communication: Languages, Representations, Interactions" (3-10 June 2001 Rome), at which he presented a methodological topic related to his research “Focus group method on the study of social representations” during a workshop session.  This research has also led to interesting publications including the following articles:

Further to this presentation, and by means of the discussions during the Summer School, the fellow was invited to participate in the VIII Congrès International de l'Association pour la Recherche Interculturelle (ARIC), Faculté de Psychologie et des Sciences de l'Education, Université de Genève (24-28 Septembre 2001).

Furthermore, the fellow benefited from his stay at the University of Rome, and bibliographical research he performed there prepared him for his future publications, which are directly related to the subjects of social memory and political psychology, seen from the perspective of the theory of social representations. As a result, the fellow is now widely published in his subject in leading International Psychology journals such as Bulletin de Psychologie, European Review of Applied Psychology, Journal des Psychologues, Les Cahiers Internationaux de Psychologie Sociale, Psychologie & Société and has collaborated with leading academics of the field in contributing chapters in International books.

His fellowship and consequential links with the MCTS partners has enabled both the fellow’s physical mobility and his transition from Research Trainee to acquiring Academic status.  In fact the fellow now holds the position of Maître de Conférences, at Université de Lyon II.  Since making this transition, he has maintained his ties with the European PhD on S.R. & Com. training structure, and has, in fact, progressed to now playing a pro-active role as a member of the So.Re.Com Thematic Network.  He is also a member of the Italian-French Ministry VINCI Network.

He is also an active member of LEPS (Laboratoire européen de psychologie sociale, Maison des sciences de l'homme, Paris), where his role is in ‘Diffusion scientifique’.  The fellow co-coordinated, along with Gerard Duveen (University of Cambridge) and Themis Apostolidis (University of Aix-en-Provence) the LEPS Research Group: The power of beliefs (2001) This group studied the role of beliefs in social life, their forms of expression and realization, their history and the psychosocial process of their emergence. At the conclusion of a single closed seminar organized in the MSH in December, 2001, a collective publication was realized:

During his fellowship the fellow worked on the Social Representation of the computer among teenagers, on social justice and prejudice and on the far right group web sites at the ISCTE in Lisbon under the supervision of Prof. Jesuino.

At the ISCTE Luca Tateo collected additional bibliographical material, specifically related to the topic of computer mediated communication.

During his fellowship, the fellow attended the lectures of the post-graduated programme of the “Departemento de Psicologia Social e das organizaçoes” at the host University, and participated in a great number of seminars on a range of topics relevant to his subject, and which were also very relevant in preparing him for his subsequetnial professional activties such as his position since July 2002 as Director of the "Pre-okkupati",  Vocational Guidance and Job Help Service of the Municipality of Salerno (Italy);

 Prior to entering the Marie Curie Fellowship, he participated in the 6th International Summer School on Social Representations and Communication: ‘Social Representations Theory around the World’ (28 May - 3 June 2000, Rome Italy), and as a Marie Curie Fellow, he participated in the 7 th International Summer School on Social Representations and Communication. (3-10 June 2001 Rome), where he presented his research “The social representation of computer among teenagers” during a workshop session.  He also later participated in the 9th  International Summer School of the European PhD on Social Representations & Communication: " Communication Studies and Social Representations: a Theoretical and Metodological Dialogue through Research" (Colonna Castle, Genazzano, Rome, Italy, 7-16 June 2003)

Following the contacts he made at the ISCTE he was invited to give a lecture at the University of Porto on “Social Psychology of the Internet: the state of the art”. Since leaving the programme, the fellow has used the research he did at the host university during his fellowship to go on to give presentations at many conferences such as:

During her fellowship dr. Livia Bruscaglioni worked on her PhD. thesis “Social representation and looking for a job: a study in the Italian context”, under the supervision of Prof. Pierre Vergès

During her stay at the University of Aix-en-Provence in co-operation with the Maison mediterranèenne de Science de l’Homme” the fellow:

§       carried out an in-depth study of the theoretical and methodological aspects related to the Central Nucleus Theory and its recent developments

§        studied the function of data analysis programs utilised by the methodology of Central nucleus approach

§       collected data for her PhD thesis (questionnaires and interviews)

§       analysed the data of the questionnaires collected, under the supervision of Professor Pierre Vergès  (by Evoc2000, Simi)

§       she collected additional bibliographical material related to the central nucleus Theory and to the subject of her thesis

§       by participating in a great number of the seminars (offered within the DEA programme of the  Laboratoire de psychologie sociale) she was able to gain knowledge on the Theory of Social Representations which is currently debated at the University of Aix en Provence.

At the host University she did not only benefit from the tutorship of Prof. P. Vergès, but also she exchanged ideas and received suggestions from Prof. J.C. Abric and C.  Flament. With the help of Professor Apostolidis she had the opportunity to get familiar with the content-analysis programme Alceste.

During the three months of fellowship dr. Elena Bocci worked on her doctoral research  “Social Representations, Mass Communication and Psychology of Tourism” at the E.H.E.S.S. in Paris (France) under the supervision of the Prof. Serge Moscovici, director of the European Ph.D on S.R. and Communication.

At the E.H.E.S.S. she also collaborated with other researchers of the LPS (Laboratoire de Psychologie Sociale)  exchanging methodological knowledge about different types of data analysis software developed on Social Sciences, in particular:

- the software ‘Prospéro’ version 6.0 for Windows (F. Chateauraynaud and J.P. Charriau);

-the package ‘Hudap’ (Hebrew University Data Analysis Package) based  on the methods  developed by Guttman which are widely used in social science  research.

In order to improve her theoretical and methodological training, she participated in a number of seminars at the EHESS. The poster she presented during the IX Congresso del Comitato Scientifico Nazionale “Psicologia e Turismo” Congresso Nazionale ARIPT, is the result of several research programes in which she is involved:

-        CNR 1998 &1999 Accessibility and tourism: analysis difficulties and methodologies (Research coordinator: Prof. Luigi Greco);

During her fellowship the fellow worked on the topic of her research: “ The Social Representation of Ecological Consumption in the Family”, at the University of Provence in Aix-en-Provence, under the supervision of Prof. Pierre Vergés.

At the University of Provence she collected additional bibliographical material, specifically related to the social representation and ecological consumption.  She also attended the seminar: Influences minoritaires et majoritaires sur une Representation Sociale by Prof. Claude Flament (29/6/2001)

Prior to beginning her fellowship she participated in the 6th International Summer School on Social Representations and Communication: "Social Representations Theory Around the World" which was held at the European Ph.D on Social Representations & Communication Research Centre & Multimedia Lab in Rome, Italy from 28th May-3^rd June 2000. 

During the period of her fellowship she went on to participate in the 7^th International School on Social Representations and Communication held in Rome from 3rd-10^th June 2001, where she presented her research “The Social Representation of Ecological Consumption in the Family” during a workshop session.

While at the host University she greatly benefited from the tutorship of Prof. Pierre Vergés, but also from the expertise of Prof. J. C. Abric, Prof. C. Flament and of a team of senior researchers. They all contributed in a very important way towards the construction of the questionnaire that will be applied to all members of the families of the sample of her research.

During her first period of fellowship, the fellow worked on the social representations of children’s relationships in fantasy and reality, at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (University of Cambridge) under the supervision of Prof. Gerard Duveen.  At the FSPS, Célia Soares collected extensive bibliographical material, specifically relavent to her topic of research and also to related topics (such as social, developmental and clinical psychology, sociology, etc.).

During her fellowship she revised her preliminary research project and developed a new line focused on “Stories of children’s relationships: understanding the construction of meanings about fantasy and reality”.

The fellow attended the lectures of the post-graduated programme of the host University, and participated in a large number of seminars, including a seminar of Prof. Robert Hinde about relationships open to doctoral and post-doctoral research trainees. She also conducted a pre-test of interviews in Lisbon during September, in order to develop the methodologies that are going to be applied in her research. This pre-test was developed with a group a Portuguese children between 6 and 9 years old.

During her fellowship she also had the opportunity to attend lectures of the post-graduated programme of Social Psychology in the FSPS including  - Thematical Seminars:. During the second period of fellowship, the fellow continued her research on children’s representations of social life and the construction of meanings about fantasy and reality under the supervision of Prof. Annamaria de Rosa (La Sapienza). The fellow’s work combines 3 studies that aim at exploring and interpreting the meanings that children construct about friendship and power in a school context. In Rome, the fellow mainly concentrated on methodological training, namely on the meta-analysis of bibliographic material on SR, and on the development of her third study (concerning the dimensions of power within a fantasy scenario). She also had the opportunity to collect bibliographical material, mainly on epistemological and methodological issues related to the SR Theory. She also took part in one seminar dedicated to a developmental systemic approach to children’s studies.

Prior to becoming a Marie Curie fellow, the fellow had been quite an active participant in the events of the European PhD on Social Representations & Communication, attending both the 5th International Summer School on Social Representations and Communication "Developing European Doctoral Training", Rome, Italy 5th-11th June 1999,  and the 6th International Summer School on Social Representations and Communication "Social Representations Theory Around the World" held in Rome, Italy 28th May-3rdJune 2000. During the period of her fellowship, she participated in the 7th International Summer School on Social Representations and Communication "Communication: Languages, Representations, Interactions" Rome, Italy 3th-10th June 2001, at which she presented her research project, “Children’s development and SR. A longitudinal approach” during a workshop session.

She also participated in International Conferences, presenting her research at the III JIRS (2-5 September 2003, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), where she presented 2 papers; and also in a National Symposium related to Psychology Research (16-18 October, 2003, Lisbon, Portugal), where she presented one paper related to her doctoral research. One of the papers presented at the III JIRS led to a publication in one book related to Theory and Practices on SR. Moreover, she was invited to conduct one seminar on Methodologies for data analysis, in a post-graduated program at the Federal University of Paraíba, Brazil, held on 11.09.2003. At the end of her fellowship, she started to organize an homage book to her Portuguese supervisor, Prof. J. Correia Jesuino, for the occasion of his retirement.

Since leaving the programme she has maintained her links with the European PhD on Social Representations & Communicaiton by taking part the events organised at the Research Centre and Multimedia Lab in Rome.  She attended the 9th  International Summer School of the European PhD on Social Representations & Communication " Communication Studies and Social Representations: a Theoretical and Metodological Dialogue through Research" held at Colonna Castle, Genazzano - Rome (ITALY), 7-16 June 2003, the 10th International Summer School of the European PhD on Social Representations & Communication entitled: Social influence and communication in the new scenarios of the information society. held at Colonna Castle, Genazzano - Rome (Italy) from 24th April -   3rd May 2004, and the 2nd International LAB Meeting - Spring Session 2005 - Social Representations in Action and Construction in Media and Society. During her fellowship the fellow worked on her PhD. thesis “One Morality or Multiple Moralities? Religious Ideology, Conceptions of Morality and Rule Systems among the Finnish Adolescents having Lutheran and Conservative Laestadian, and Nonreligious Affiliation.” During this time the fellow read articles and books related to her research field. Moreover, she completed the analysis of her interview data (Atlas.ti and SPSS). She wrote the manuscript for the doctoral dissertation that she submitted for the final pre-examination. She also participated in the 8th International Summer School of the European PhD on Social Representations & Communication "Communication, Media and Social Representations" New Media: Nets and Internet,  Colonna Castle, Genazzano - Rome (ITALY), 1-9 June 2002, where she gave a presentation of her research.

During the fellowship she participated in ‘The Methodology Course on SPAD Correspondence Analysis’. December 2001 - January 2002, organized by the Dept. of Social Psychology, “La Sapienza”, a course that dealt with the correspondence analysis done with the SPAD program, led by dott. Elena Bocci.  She also participated in the international seminar dealing with the socio-psychological implications of the attacks in the USA on 11th September, held on 21th of December 2001, by Richard Mollica, from the University of Harvard (Boston, USA).  Both courses were organized by the Dept. of Social Psychology of the University of “La Sapienza”.  Moreover, she participated in the seminar, organised by Prof. de Rosa, on “11th September 2001:emotional impact, iconic representational systems and social memory, in the reconstruction of the day which dramatically changed the personal and global risk perception” (October - November 2001). During her stay in Italy she also improved her linguistic skills and she currently has moderate Italian language skills, besides good English, moderate Russian and Swedish.

During her fellowship the fellow worked under the direction of Prof. Elisabeth Lage at the Laboratoire de Psychologie Sociale of the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris.  While there, the fellow was able to make use of the main library at the Maison des Sciences de l’Homme, and also the extensive specialist library on social representations held by the Laboratoire itself.  A literature search in these two locations revealed numerous key texts in French which she had not been able to locate in the United Kingdom.  Therefore the fellowship proved to be crucial to her research.  Additionally, the fellow was able to read several PhD theses on topics closely related to her own area of interest that were either written at, or examined in the Laboratoire.

During her three-month stay Juliet Foster was able to attend two courses of relevant seminars both held in the EHESS.  The first, led by M. Gaudillière and Mme Davoine was entitled ‘Folie et lien social’; the second, which was organised by M. Dodier, considered questions of political change and user involvement in the health services. Furthermore, the fellow was able to attend a part of the conference organised at the Maison des Sciences de l’Homme on Representation and Belief.  One of the most profitable parts of her stay was the opportunity for formal and informal discussion with other researchers in the field at the Laboratoire, both those with more experience and those closer to her own generation.  In particular she benefited from the direction of Prof. Lage, and also had the opportunity to discuss her work with Prof. Denise Jodelet, one of the most prominent contributors to work on social representations of mental illness.

Before becoming a Marie Curie Fellow, she had take part in the 5th International Summer School on Social Representations and Communication "Developing European Doctoral Training" Rome, Italy, 5th-11th June 1999.  During her fellowship period, she also had the opportunity to participate in “Le pouvoir des croyances / The Power of Beliefs. Psychologie sociale, représentations sociales et phénomènes de croyance :Voies empiriques et questions épistémologiques” (organized by:T. Apostolidis (Université de Provence), G. Duveen (University of Cambridge), N. Kalampalikis (LPS-EHESS) –13 & 14 December 2001, Paris.

As a result of her stay in Paris the fellow was able to complete her PhD thesis, entitled ‘The social representations of mental illness held by clients of the mental health services’, which she submitted to Cambridge University on her return in January 2002.  Since her period as fellow, she has proceeded to do participate in international events such as chairing the session ‘Transformations in Social Knowledge’ at the Fifth Inter-University Graduate Conference on Social Psychology, held at the University of Cambridge, 22^nd May, 2004.

She has also made the transition to academic status thanks to her experience and the opportunities for physical mobility and research facilities that she enjoyed during her fellowship, and she now holds the position of College Research Fellow in the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Corpus Christi College, University of Cambridge.

The fellow has since submitted papers to various journals on the subjects discussed in her thesis, based on ideas which she developed while in Paris, and presented the paper:

During his fellowship the fellow worked on the Social representations of organisational change at the ISCTE in Lisbon under the supervision of Prof. Jesuino.  At the ISCTE Daniele dell’Erba collected additional bibliographical material, specifically related to the topic of Social Representation Theory and Organsitanional Change Management.

As Marie Curie Fellow, he participated in the 7th International Summer School on Social Representations and Communication. (3-10 June 2001 Rome), and presented a detailed outline of his research project “Social Representations and Change Management” during a workshop session.

The fellow made extensive use of the excellent research facilities both at the ISCTE and at INDEG and has kept in close contact with Prof. Jesuino of the post-graduated programme of the “Departemento de Psicologia Social e das organizaçoes” of the host University.

The fellow issued the 41 page “A Dialogue on Change; When Social Representation Theory meets Change Management” to discuss how Social Representations Theory might be applied to the field of change management. He has also kept a record of his progress by means of detailed Project Status Updates to reflect the development of his thinking and the contents of the regular meetings with Prof. Jesuino, his scientific coordinator.  Leveraging the contacts throughout Europe with a major management consulting firm he gathered an extensive set of case studies and other research material for use in the subsequent phases of his project.

The fellow issued the 47 page ‘Managing Unpredictability.  Beyond Change Management: Improvisational Performance in the Team-Based Learning Organisation’. During his stay in Portugal he managed to get involved in the planning and management of an e-business startup (iberatlantico, inc.). He leveraged this practical experience to create a case study to test his theoretical approach as desribed in  Phase III plan (outlined in the ‘Summary and Phase III scope’ presentation).

He was also directly involved  in a case study on a large transformational project based in the UK prior to becoming a Fellow.

The fellow also started a research work-package involving 15 semi-structured interviews with senior managers and change practitioners in different sectors to gain their perspective on how companies begin and successfully complete change based on Kotter’s and Cohen’s Change Assessment methodology (http://www.theheartofchange.com).

The output of this research work will provide the Fellow, as planned, with the necessary components to finalise his thesis.  During his time as fellow he reached proficiency in Portuguese.

At the host University he did not only benefit from the tutorship of Prof. J. Jesuino, but also from personal contact with Portuguese professionals, primarily lawyers, investment bankers and journalists to improve his understanding of portuguese culture and language and, in doing so, laying the foundation work for a possible comparative analysis across different European working cultures and their impacts on the acceptance of change.

During her first period of fellowship, Alessandra Dal Secco worked on her research “Social Representations of domestic violence by the Police and the National Health Service”, at the Department of Social Psychology, University of Helsinki, under the supervision of Prof. Klaus Helkama. At a macro level of analysis, the fellow’s study explores the impact of recent cultural, social and political international changes related to gender-based violence on the national policy and legislative moves. At a micro level, her work looks at the dynamics of the social meanings and usages that violence against women undertakes for different government actors as well as at the range of social practices elicited by these discourses. More precisely, this research will examine two key state institutions differently dealing with the problem of domestic violence against women, the Police and the National Health Service, in order to shed light on their mutating representations, practices and policy solutions. On such premises, the interaction between the symbolic constructs and institutional practices will be explored.

At the University of Helsinki, the fellow collected bibliographic material, especially on theoretical women in feminist analysis, and on pre-existing research concerning the Police and the National Health Service.

As a post-graduate research trainee, the fellow attended Seminars on Social Representations at the Department issues on the social representations theory, on the concept of violence against of Social Psychology of the University of Helsinki, held by Visiting Scholars: Dr Christian Staerkle from the University of Geneva; Prof. Elisabeth Lage from EHESS, France and Prof. Patrick Jakubowicz from the University of Paris-sud.

As a European Ph.D. research trainee, she participated in the Research Course on “Welfare, Equality, Sexuality and Violence” in Tampere (25^th-27^th January 2002), organised by the ‘Nordic Network on Violences, Agency Practices and Social Change”. In this context, the fellow presented the paper of her research project on Social Representations.

The fellow presented her project, “Social Representations of domestic violence by the Police and the National Health Service”, at the Seminar Group of the Social Psychology Department at the University of Helsinki. The presentation of her research was followed by a very useful discussion, which stressed on the project’s potential and constraint.

During her staying, the fellow was not only supported by Prof. Helkama, but also by Dr. Liisa Husu (Department of Social Psychology, University of Helsinki) and Dr. Suvi Ronkainen (Department of Women Studies, University of Tampere), both experts on gender issues.

Furthermore, in order to strengthen her knowledge on the Finnish context regarding gender-based violence, she contacted institutional experts in the field. She conducted interviews with representatives of Stakes, Health Ministry of Social Affairs, as well as of the Ministry of the Interior. In particular, she got in touch with Leena Ruusuvuori, the person responsible for the Social Research –Violence against women and Prostitution, STAKES- National Research and Development Centre for Welfare, and Mikko Lampikovski, Chief Superintendent, responsible for the Police Department. Both of these institutions, dealing with gender-based violence, are integrating new programmes aiming to improve the institutional response to this phenomenon: STAKES develops public awareness-raising campaign promoting information and education, whereas the Police Department of Ministry of Interior implement training courses for Police officers and group discussion.

Moreover, the fellow worked on her research, focusing on the theoretical framework as well as the elaboration of data and results, in order to present her project’s initial conclusions at the European Ph.D. International Summer School, as well as the International Conference of Social Representations in Stirling.

During her second period of fellowship, Alessandra Dal Secco worked on research topic under the supervision of Prof. Ligia Amancio (ISCTE).  The supportive environment and stimulating work atmosphere at the Instituto Superior de Ciências do Trabalho e da Empresa (ISCTE) enabled the fellow to build a more thorough theoretical framework to pursue her research project as well as structuring a detailed plan of research, on which grounding the following stage of data collection. In particular, the six months in Portugal were used to collect international bibliographic material to expand theoretical foundations of her research project - mostly concerning social representations theory, social representations of gender, gender issues, notions of democracy and citizenships in contemporary western States, institutional approaches. Likewise, on the basis of relevant international bibliographic material collected, she worked on and refined the qualitative and quantitative methodological aspects, ultimately serving to develop the methodological plan and start collecting data in Italy.

She benefited greatly from the stimulating environment of the Department of Social Psychology, where weekly meeting and seminars were held. She took part in a great number of seminars and workshops, some of them including productive discussion about other doctoral research trainees’ research projects –many of which strongly related to issues of social representations of gender - while others offering advanced methodological training, such as the two-days Advanced Seminar of Research Methodology on “Técnica de Anàlise Multiniveis” held by Prof. Vicente Gonzàles-Roma, Universidade de Valencia (02-03 June 05, ISCTE). Moreover, she attended a number of seminars held by international invited speakers, among which the seminar on La pensée sociale à la lumière de l’Affaire Dreyfuss held by Prof. Elisabeth Lage, Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Paris (06 May 2005). As Marie Curie Fellow, she participated from ISCTE in the 2^nd International Lab Meeting in Rome from 29^th April to 8^th May 2005. She also took part in the second section of the Forty-ninth session of the Commission on the Status of Women taking place from the 28 February-11 March 2005 in New York, at the Economic Council of the United Nations Organisation. Moreover, she attended the Encontro Género e Polìtica, organised by Nucleo de Estudos de Ciencia Polìtica e Relaçoes Internacionais, Faces de Eva- Centro de Estudo sobre a Mulher, FCSH/UNL, held at the Faculdade de Ciencias Sociais e Humanas on the 19-20 May 2005.  She is currently in the process of completing her PhD Thesis.

The fellow spent a year in Rome in his last year of European PhD with the intention of finalizing his research and to write his thesis for the European PhD on Social Representation and Communication. He had visited Rome before with an Erasmus grant and worked with Prof. Annamaria de Rosa on a possible cross-national comparative research between Hungary and Italy. As a main result of this preparatory work he assisted Prof. de Rosa in developing a new instrument, so called EuroSKYcompass, for examining the complex representation of North, South, East, West, and positioning national and other European (together with the self) into this space.

At first he started with a bibliographic search in the international databases accessible from La Sapienza University on the topics relevant to the research. The second main source was the bibliographic database of the European PhD on S.R & C. In the meantime he also started to analyse the data collected with the above-mentioned new research tool in Hungary. This research was included into his doctoral thesis. The first version of the thesis was written in Rome including all theoretical and empirical parts. In writing the thesis he regularly consulted with Prof. Annamaria de Rosa. During his stay in Rome he was also introduced to the administration and statistical data analysis of the associative networks (a research technique developed by Prof. de Rosa).

Prior to entering the fellowship he presented a paper at the bi-annual International Conference on Social Representations in Stirling, Scotland: 6th International Conference on Social Representations “Thinking Societies: Common Sense and Communication” (27th august - 1st September 2002, Stirling, Scotland) “Between East and West: Hungarian perspectives on other nations and Europe” (title of the presented paper).

This conference gave even richer insights into the current problems and latest results of the research field. He presented his work here from another aspect, incorporating the feed-back that was given at the 8^th International Summer School on Social Representations and Communications “Media: Nets and Internet” (1-10 June 2002, Rome - Genazzano, Italy) where he had the opportunity to present his research (“Between East and West: Hungarians perceiving other nations and Europe”) in an intensive workshop for the PhD research trainees. Here he got feedback here from professors and participants about the first version of the doctoral thesis. There was also an opportunity to attend lectures and discussions at the summer school. Learning about new research methods in analysing complex, multidimensional research designs was also possible.

Before arriving in Rome he was asked to be the Hungarian partner (representing his department at Eötvös University, Budapest) of a cross-national European research team (Euronat) investigating the interconnected processes of national identity and representation of Europe (together with a possibly forming European identification). This research is funded by the EC and has several empirical phases together with a final application stage in 2004. During his stay, he also did research in these topics and attended the following research meetings: Euronat research meeting (14-16 June 2002, Prague), Euronat research meeting (13-15 December 2002, Athens).

In the final phase of his fellowship he joined a team of researchers led by Prof. de Rosa in designing a new cross-national comparative study about the social representation of Europe, European countries in relation to the cardinal points. This research program is still developing. After designing the instrument, now it is in a phase of discussion of results and publication.

The fellowship played an integrating role in his research. He summarized previous empirical work connected to his European doctoral thesis, together with reviewing the relevant literature. The first version of his thesis, which he has now completed  and discussed was a product of this synthesis. During his stay in Rome, he joined the new wide scale research program (“Eurosky compass”) which goes further towards bringing his research to new insights and providing further contacts with the scholars at La Sapienza University and attended the program’s research meetings.

During her fellowship, Elena Morales worked on her PhD thesis : « "Social Representation  of the victims of prejudice and discrimination", At the Laboratoire de Psychologie Sociale at the EHESS, under the supervision of Prof. Lage, she has been researching the Social Representation of immigration from the view point of both Latin American immigrants and the Spanish press. Following the advice of Prof. Lage she introduced the concept of Social Memory as a new perspective in the analysis of her data, as well as in the comprehension of the global problem. With the help of Prof. Lage, she further developed the methodological approach of her research by concentrating her sample, and by designing a multi-method approach that satisfies the needs of this project. This multi-method approach involves the following parts:

·       Qualitative exploration: interviews. The fellow will realize between 30 and 50 interviews to investigate the character of categories and attributed stereotypes. These interviews will help her to investigate the familiar history of the immigrants, their migration plan and, their satisfaction of life.

·       Quantitative: questionnaire. The fellow is going to collect 200 questionnaires with socio-demographic data, population variables, level of religious involvement and indices of direct contact with host population. She will also attempt to investigate their perception of their problems, their perception of the discrimination and the resources used.

·       Qualitative validation: revision of interviews for getting a more complete picture, by clarifying confused questions and problems of understanding.

·       Quantitative: content analysis of the press. The fellow would like to study two journals of different political influence in Spain such as "El País" (left) and "El Mundo" (right). She finds it valuable to do a quantitative analysis of headlines concerning immigration from 1999 to 2002 to demonstrate elements of social control and identify particular ideologies.

 At the LPS the fellow had the opportunity to use two valuables tools for the analysis of qualitative data, which are the programs Alceste and Prospero. These programs are of vital importance as tools for her research.

At the library of "La Maison des Sciences de l'Homme" and the "Laboratoire de Psycologie Sociale" the fellow had the opportunity to collect additional bibliographical material, specifically related to the topic of Social Representation, social exclusion and social memory. She also took the opportunity to attend courses at the of the DEA at the “Laboratoire de Psycologie Sociale de l' EHESS” including: ”The asymetric symbolic model” by prof. Ligia Amancio, “The homogeneity of the group” by prof. Lorenzo-Cioldi  and a lecture of the Department of Social Psychology at Paris V: “Emotion et sentiment” by prof. J.P. Leyens

 Before her period as Marie Curie Fellow, the fellow had participated in the 7th International Summer School on Social Representations and Communication "Communication: Languages, Representations, Interactions" (Rome, Italy 3th-10th June 2001).  During her fellowship she participated in the 8^th International Summer School on Social Representations and Communication in Rome (June 1- 10, 2001) where she presented the results of her research as part of a workshop. Alexandra Steinberg, as part of her Ph.D. thesis at the London School of Economics, UK, spent six months as a Marie Curie research fellow in the Mediterranean Laboratory for Sociology (LAMES) of the University of the Provence (C.N.R.S.) in Aix-en-Provence, France. The research fellowship was taken under the supervision of Pierre Vergès, director of the Mediterranean Laboratory for Sociology.

 During her fellowship, Alexandra Steinberg conducted research on the theme of her PhD thesis  "The impact of the dotcom crash on the changing sense-making of success and decision-making amongst e-entrepreneurs". In the initial phase of her stay at the LAMES, Ms Steinberg completed two chapters for her Upgrading Examination and Viva at the London School of Economics and Political Science. Existing data gathered from e-entrepreneurs in London was analysed for the cognitive structure of representations. An adequate and pertinent analysis of the data was possible thanks to the software developed for this purpose by Prof. Vergès. Specifically, Ms Steinberg developed a questionnaire that was used in the second stage of fieldwork of her PhD thesis in London.

 The fellow also gathered bibliographical information on the cognitive organisation of social meaning systems of economic concepts. In her overall social psychological approach, the cognitive level complemented her first part of the analysis  which covered the social level of interpretation of social representations. In her further research Ms Steinberg  has conducted an analysis of the cognitive organisation of the social themes she had found in the first phase of her fieldwork. Again here Ms Steinberg benefited from the experience and research conducted by Pierre Vergès. An additional methodological chapter on the second phase of fieldwork, as well as another theoretical chapter, have been written that will both form part of her PhD thesis,

 Discussions with Pierre Vergès contributed to the clarification and development of the ideas that Ms Steinberg argues in her research. Exchange of ideas with Pierre Vergès highly enriched the fellow’s scientific approach particularly towards the balancing of her overall qualitative research methodology with a quantitative one.

 The fellow participated at the 8^th International Summer School on Social Representations and Communications (1-9 June 2002, Rome - Genazzano Castle) “Towards understanding organisational decision-making amongst knowledge professionals: re-thinking business communities” (title of the presentation) and the 9^th International Summer School on Social Representations and Communications (9-16 June 2003, Rome - Genazzano Castle) « On 'Community-expertise' in E-entrepreneurship » (title of the presentation).  These presentations were based on the results of her fieldwork. Moreover, she presented her work at the IFIP (International Federation of Information Processing) Workgroup 8.3 workshop of the International Federation of Information Processing as a case study of Decision Making and Decision Support on 28^th and 29^th April 2003 in Paris, France. She was invited to present her work at the 11^th European Congress on Work and Organizational Psychology, 14-17 May 2003, Lisbon, Portugal.

 The fellow benefited of the meta-theoretical analysis of bibliographic material in her own subject area, through an on-line database held at the University of Rome ‘La Sapienza’, Italy, under the direction of Prof. Annamaria Silvana de Rosa.  The fellow also used the opportunity of the fellowship well in making considerable progress in her proficiency in French and is now on an intermediate level in both spoken and written French.

During her fellowship, the Fellow worked on the Social Representation of domesticated animals and animal rights, at the E.H.E.S.S. in Paris under the supervision of Prof. Moscovici.

As Marie Curie Fellow, she participated in the 8^th International Summer School on Social Representation and Communication (1-9 June 2002, Rome) where the title of her presentation was: “We landed on the Moon, mosquitoes didn't: qualitative data on animal testing”, and in the 9^th International Summer School on Social Representation and Communication (7-16 June 2003, Rome), where she presented her research concerning the attitudes towards animal experimentation in Italy and Finland (2002) and concerning the activists’ representation of animal rights (2003), during the workshop sessions: “Activists’ representations of animal rights: an exploratory study”.

Moreover, she attended the 12^th Annual Conference of the International Society for Anthrozoology (ISAZ), "The social lives of animals: Human/Nonhuman Cognition, Interactions, Relationships" (15-16 August, 2003), held in Canton, OH, U.S.A., where she presented a poster entitled “Activists’ representations of animal rights: an exploratory study”.

The Fellow attended the lectures of the D.E.A. and post-graduate programmes of the E.H.E.S.S., and participated in a great number of seminars. She collected additional bibliographical material, specifically related to the theory of the social representations, the social construction of nature and to the sociological analysis of the human-animal relationship.

At the host University, she did not only benefit from the tutorship of Prof. Moscovici, but also worked with Dr. Nikos Kalampalikis. Following the ideas she exchanged with Prof. Moscovici and Dr. Kalampalikis, the Fellow has proficiently improved her research plan on social representations of domesticated animals. Moreover, the Fellow has investigated the activists’ representations of animal rights in Modena, Italy, through the methodology of the free-association task and of the focus group tecnique, testing a qualitative research method suitable for the study of such issue.

During her fellowship Tina Nebe worked on the Social Representations of the Immigrant ‘Other’ held by adolescents in Eastern Germany and Southern Spain under the supervision of Prof. Elisabeth Lage (EHESS). The fellow’s work combines two case studies that aim at exploring and interpreting the common sense images of ‘the immigrant’ as they are held by secondary school research trainees along the external frontiers of the present-day European Union. While in Paris, the fellow concentrated mainly on methodological training (both quantitative and qualitative) and on the analysis of previously collected data (Focus Groups, Questionnaires and Associative Networks). The supportive and stimulating work atmosphere at the Laboratoire de Psychologie Sociale (LPS) enabled the fellow to analyse and interpret the bulk of qualitative data and present it to her colleagues and the interested public in a formal presentation (28 February 2003) as well as to make good progress on the quantitative data in the spring and summer months.

In addition, the fellow used her year in Paris productively to collect bibliographical material, above all on identity/social positioning and on inter-group relations, to tutor undergraduate ‘interns’ at the LPS in quantitative methodology. She took part in a great number of seminars and workshops, from which several offered advanced methodological training, like the Summer School in Social Science Data Analysis and Collection, organized by the University of Essex.

Additionally, she followed two weekly seminars at the EHESS, on Quantitative Methods (Prof. Forsé) and on ‘Modèles et recherches dans le champ des représentations sociales’ (Profs. Lage and Rouquette), and helped to set up two Ateliers (working groups) for doctoral research trainees, on Political Psychology and on ‘Analyse des données appliquée aux représentations sociales’ respectively.

Prior to becoming fellow she participated in the 6th International Summer School on Social Representations and Communication "Social Representations Theory Around the World” held in Rome, Italy 28th May-3rdJune 2000, and also in the 7th International Summer School on Social Representations and Communication "Communication: Languages, Representations, Interactions" Rome, Italy 3th-10th June 2001.

During his fellowship, Mr Lilian Negura did research on the theme of his PhD thesis : « Social representation of work in a transition country. The case of Republic of Moldova”, under the supervision of Pierre Vergès, Director of the Mediterranean Laboratory for Sociology of the Mediterranean House of Human Sciences.

The fellow improved his research tools during this period, especially the questionnaire and the words association test. An adequate and pertinent analysis of the data was possible thanks to the software developed for this purpose by Mr. Vergès.  Mr Negura also gathered bibliographical information on the evolution of work, as well as on the representation of work in the West European countries. To accomplish this goal, the fellow benefited from the access to the databases and to the Laboratory of Sociology and the Economics Library of the University of Aix. Using the information found, a chapter of 40 pages, that will be part of his PhD thesis, has been written.

Discussions with Mr. Claude Flament contributed to the clarification and development of the ideas that Mr. Negura argues for in his research. Exchange of ideas with Mr. Apostoliadis highly enriched the fellow’s scientific approach. These scientific exchanges resulted in a recommendation for the publication of an article in the Journal Psychologie et Société.

Mr. Negura participated at the 8^th International Summer School in Rome (June 1- 10, 2001) where he presented the results of his research as part of a workshop. Moreover, he presented the paper “Managers’ social representation of socio-professional integration” at the 6^th International Conference on Social Representations “Thinking Societies: Common Sense and Communication” (August 27^th –September 1^st, 2002).

During his fellowship, Mr. Peter Sekloca did research on the theme of his PhD thesis: “The Model of the ‘New’ Public and Effective Social Freedom,” under the supervision of Prof. Jose Valencia, professor at the Faculty of Psychology, University of the Basque Country. Professor Jose Valencia helped him with his research by showing the parallels between social psychology and the theory of public opinion. Additionally, discussions with him contributed to the clarification and development of the ideas that Mr. Sekloca argues for in his research.

The fellow studied the theory of social psychology that will help him to explain influence processes in the postmodern or “new” conceptualisations of the public. The processes, critically addressed from the normative point of view of deliberative democratic theory, were explained by framing theory. Its concepts were used to analyse strategic actions of the members of public, who try to define the context in which symbolic constitution of the “new” public takes place.

Mr. Peter Sekloca also researched the psychological drives at collective processes of opinion formation and processes of attitude change, which helped him normatively to explain the importance of public discourse, which “new” theories undermine by plebiscitary understanding of opinion formation.

To accomplish these two phases of research, the fellow benefited from the access to the libraries of University of the Basque Country. Based on literature, a chapter describing the problematic of public exclusion and a chapter considering the importance of dialog in consensus formation were written. Both chapters will be added to his PhD thesis.

Exchange of ideas with Prof. Jose Valencia, other professors at the Faculty of Psychology and postgraduate researchers highly enriched the fellow’s scientific approach. These scientific exchanges resulted in an article which was submitted to the Political Communication Journal in 2003: Sekloca, Peter, Toward a dialogical understanding of the representations of the public.

On 30. 1. 2003 Mr. Sekloca presented his research at the Faculty of Psychology, explaining the basic ideas that he developed in his PhD thesis. He also tried to show the main lines that connect the two disciplines, one being the social psychology, which is a well-known subject to the public, and the other communication theory that the fellow is more familiar with.

During her fellowship, Thalia Magioglou finished the first draft of her PhD; she also further developped the group of Political Psychology she has initiated at the Maison des Sciences de l’Homme in Paris, in 2002, (EPoPs), by creating contacts with scolars and doctoral research trainees at Cambridge University. She participated in seminars and activities of this group both at Cambridge and Paris. She planned with her colleagues a symposium for June 2004.

Her research concerns “The Social Representations of Democracy between Imaginary and Reality. A qualitative study with young people in Greece” and during her fellowship, she has been hosted by the Department of Social Psychology at the University of Cambridge, under the supervision of Prof. Duveen. More particularly, she focused on theoritical work related to the concept of “social creativity”, and a narrative analysis of her interviews that illustrates the social creativity of common sens in the case of democracy.

In addition, Thalia Magioglou dedicated herself to bibliographical research and discussed her research with Gerard Duveen, the scientist in charge at the host institution. She presented her research project to the working group on social representations, lead by Prof. Duveen and Juliet Foster (February 2003). The supportive and stimulating work atmosphere at Cambridge and the encouragement of Prof. Duveen enabled her to make great progress during the period of the fellowship.

As Marie Curie Fellow, she participated in the 9^th International Summer School on Social Representations and Communication (7-16 June 2003, Rome), where she presented her research and made contacts with several professors and collegues such as Prof. Valsiner who invited her to submit an article in the journal “Culture and Psychology”.

During her fellowship Orsolya Vincze worked on collective memory of negative historical events and the effects of group membership on the transmission of negative historical events under the supervision of Prof. José Valencia and Prof. Dario Paez. The fellow repeated the study of Dario Paez and José Marques with Hungarian sample that aims at exploring and interpreting how in-group vs. out-group target - in a text of a negative historical event - and its in-group vs. out-group source affect the evaluation and recall a collective historical event. The fellow also extended the study of Pennebaker, Paez, Bellelli on the most important historical events of the last 1000 years with Hungarian sample. Furthermore, she was invited to collaborate in the drafting of a chapter (edited by O. Luminet et al.) with Dario Paez, Jose Valencia and János László on the theoretical and empirical part of the collective memory of negative historical events.

In addition, Orsolya Vincze collected bibliographical material on collective memory and its relation with social representation. She took part in seminars and workshops, during which she got a significant theoretical and methodological support from her tutors and the other Ph.D. research trainees. Among the various workshops she took part in a weekly seminar,  “Cuestiones especiales de psicología social” and in the “Workshop on collective memory of historical events” by Dario Paez

As Marie Curie fellow, she actively participated in the 9th International Summer School on Social Representation and Communication (7-16 June 2003, Rome) with the presentation “Narrative, Identity, Social Representation; Narrative Organisation of National Identity in Successful Historical Novels”.  She also took part in the Small Group Meeting Aix-en Provance, June 16-19 2004 - Dario Paez, Jose Valencia and Orsolya Vincze: Collective memory and social identity; the memories and histories of Spanish Civil War.

After the period of the fellowship she maintained her contact with the EuroPhD training structure by participating in the 10th International Summer School of the European PhD on Social Representations & Communication entitled ‘Social influence and communicationin the new scenarios of the information society’ at Colonna Castle, Genazzano - Rome (Italy), 24th April -   3rd May 2004 with a presentation entitled: “Narrative, Identity, Representation. Narrative Organization of national identity in successful historical novels.”

She also produced the follwing publications over the course of her fellowship:

Lorenzo Facchinotti fellowship started in July 2003 and finished in June 2004. He has worked on the consumption and representation of digital music. This is also the topic of his PhD thesis that he is going to discuss at the Catholic University of Milan. His supervisor at EHESS was Elisabeth Lage.  She introduced him to Prof. Saadi Lahlou with whom he worked individually. The fellow often visited Prof. Lahlou at the laboratory at EDF where they talked about the definition of the fellow’s technological subject and the methodology of research. With Prof. Lahlou, Mr. Facchinotti met experts in technology working in some other important French institutions who have studied the same subject, such as Valery Beaudouin at France Telecom.  The fellow used the library of the EHESS to do bibliographic research.  He also used Biblioteque National François Mitterand and Biblioteque publique d’information. His thesis has an empirical part that consists of qualitative interviews.  While in Paris he also attended workshops and seminars such as: Le soi, l’autre et l’objet comestible, Prof. Fischler and Prof. Lahlou

He developed some original methodological tools and wrote some papers about representations and uses of technologies that he published in collective books.

He participated to the 9th International Summer School on Social Representation and Communication (Colonna Castle, Genazzano - Rome, 7-16 June 2003) and the 10^th International Summer School on Social Representation and Communication (Colonna Castle, Genazzano - Rome (Italy) 24 th April -   3 rd May 2004), where he presented a paper about the representation of audio technologies as they are described in articles published in the Italian press, continuing his line of studies. He participated in the conference “The Life of Mobile Data: Technology, Mobility and Data Subjectivity” at Surrey University (15 th-16th April) and he is going to participate in Sims 2004 (Symposium of the International Musicological Society) at Melbourne (11 th –16th July). The research trainee went to Paris after the end of his fellowship to discuss the progress of his PhD thesis with Prof. Saadi Lahlou.  After his fellowship he continued to participate in the events of the EuroPhD on S.R. & C. During his fellowship Christophe CASTANO worked on Social Representations of History under the supervision of Prof. Luisa Lima (ISCTE, Lisboa). The fellow’s work is focused on the processes that lead to a collective construction and reconstruction of History. The aim is to show how social representations are helpful to analyse identity stakes and attitudinal stakes in front of History. There are quantitative and qualitative studies. Though the work mainly concerns French people, Christophe Castano used his year in Lisbon to work also with Portuguese people, thus making a cultural comparative analysis.

As Marie Curie Fellow, he participated to the 9^th International Summer School on Social Representation and Communication (7-16 June 2003, Rome), where he presented his research: “Political thêmata and attitudes on civil nuclear energy”. Furthermore, he will submit an article entitled « La représentation sociale de la démocratie et les élections présidentielles françaises 2002: 2 ans après, quelles perspectives ?» to the international review Psychologie et Société.

He also took part to the 10 th International Summer School on Social Representation and Communication (Colonna Castle, Genazzano - Rome - Italy, 24th April - 3rd May 2004). The title of the presented study was “The affective dimension of social representations in a political context: the case of the French presidential elections in 2002”.

The fellow participated in a small group meeting on social memory, organzed by EAESP. He presented the study “Collective memory of freedom and equality: social representations of past events and social identity in France and Portugal”.

He also participated in the 5th International Congress of ADRIPS (Association pour la Diffusion et la Recherche Internationale en Psychologie Sociale), in Lausane, 1-4 septembre 2004, presenting the study « La fabrication collective de l’Histoire : le rôle des valeurs de liberté et d’égalité pour se situer dans le temps ».

During her fellowship Sara Melendro worked on the representation of genetic testing and related technologies in the printed media in Spain and the UK. The research compares the representation of genetic testing and of its policy regulation and public debate in these two countries in Europe. During her stay in Helsinki under the supervision of Prof. Pirtilla-Backman from the Social Psychology department, the fellow mainly concentrated on methodological training for media analysis (with the help of the Communication Studies Department of Helsinki University) and on furthering her theoretical and practical understanding of the Social Representations theory. The fellow participated in an on-line discussion forum in the WeBCT-area of Helsinki University ("i-colloquim on social representations"). After having spent months delving deeper into media research and getting training and advice on data collection and analysis, the fellow made a trip to Spain to collect some of her printed data and conduct some interviews with journalists.

She took part in the fortnightly postgraduate seminars organised by Prof. Helkama at the Social Psychology school and also in the research seminars on Communication, Culture and Technology of the Communication Studies department. In both of these, the fellow presented her research at different stages. She also attended several workshops and conferences both in Finland and abroad.  The fellow participated in Jonathan Potter's course "Conflicts and Commonalities in the Field of Discourse Analysis" that took place on December 2003 at Tampere, Finland.

As Marie Curie Fellow, she participated in the 9^th International Summer School on Social Representation and Communication where she presented  her paper ‘Are Genetics Making You Sick? The construction of a "gene theory" model of disease aetiology’.

She also presented her research at conferences:

The fellow also attended two conferences in Finland: The “Biotech Society” conference (29-30 September 2003, Espoo) and the 'Ethics in Biomedical Research' International Symposium at the Biomedicum research center in Helsinki.

The fellow João Manuel de Oliveira worked on his research on “Lives beyond Life: The dissemination of the Discourse of Life on the portuguese Public Sphere” at the Laboratoire de Psychologie Sociale et de Psychologie de l’Action of the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, Paris. During the six months of his fellowship, the fellow collected bibliographic references and proposed 10 references to be meta-analysed. During this time, he discussed his research with Prof. Serge Moscovici.

Prior to his fellowship the fellow had participated in the 7th International Summer School on Social Representations and Communication "Communication: Languages, Representations, Interactions" Rome, Italy, 3th-10th June 200, and also in the  8th International Summer School of the European PhD on Social Representations & Communication "Communication, Media and Social Representations" New Media: Nets and Internet, Colonna Castle, Genazzano - Rome Italy, 1-9 June 2002.

As Marie Curie Fellow, he participated in the 9^th International Summer School on Social Representation and Communication (7-16 June 2003, Rome), where he presented his research. During his fellowship, he participated in the presentation of a common research (led by his academic supervisor Ligia Amancio) in the III Jornada Internacional e 1ª Conferência Brasileira em Representações Sociais, as well as at the 1º Colóquio Internacional sobre Família, Género e Sexualidade. During her fellowship Marialibera d’Ambrosio worked on the project led by prof. de Rosa “ Socio-spatial Representations of the urban contexts with the two study cases of Rome and Paris” under the supervision of Prof. Elisabeth Lage (EHESS) and Denise Jodelet. The fellow’s work mainly focuses on the transformations of SR of Paris and Rome as related to the structural transformation of the city itself in order to produce a follow-up on the bases of two historical studies carried out by Jodelet and Milgram (1976) on the SR of Paris in Parisians and by de Rosa (1992) on the SR of Rome in tourists from six different Countries.

While in Paris, the fellow mainly concentrated on the data collection related to the Paris study, by carrying out structured interviews (85) with Parisian dwellers on the basis of a multi-methodological questionnaire. The first step has been that of integrating (and actually finding out) the Jodelet and Milgram instrument. Subsequently this has been enriched through projective techniques (such as associative networks) and open questions. Finally an extensive collection of information about the urban and architectural development of the city of Paris has been carried out.

The supportive and stimulating working atmosphere at the Laboratoire de Psychologie Sociale (LPS) enabled the fellow to pursue this phase of the study. Thus the on-the-field research work paralleled theoretical and methodological enquiries about bibliographical issues, sampling methods, data collecting instruments and the theoretical questions underpinned through the presentation of her thesis and the discussions both with professors such as Denise Jodelet (French tutor of the fellow), Elisabeth Lage (supervisor of the fellow at the EHESS), Valerie Haas (University of Picardie) and colleagues (either internal or external to the LPS).

Therefore, Marialibera d’Ambrosio used her twelve months in Paris to collect bibliographical material, above all on Social Representation Theory, Place Identity, Social Memory, Identity/Social Positioning, to tutor undergraduate research trainees participating in the Socrates-Erasmus project at the EHESS in carrying out interviews and methodology for data analysis (either qualitative or quantitative). She took part in a great number of seminars and workshops, and many of them offered both theoretical issues and advanced methodological training. As a Marie Curie Fellow, she participated in the 10th International Summer School on Social Representations and Communication (24th April 2004 - 3rd May 2004, Colonna Castle, Genazzano-Rome) and presented her research at the:

D’Ambrosio M. (2003) 5th Inter-University Graduate Conference in Social Psychology, University of Cambridge (May 22^nd 2003), where she presented her research Transformations of the Social Representations in changing metropolitan context: what about the capital of the XIX century? “  Here she received  stimulating feed-back and suggestions and appreciations from one of her tutors (Prof. A.S. de Rosa, University of Rome “La Sapienza” and scientific coordinator of the European PhD on S.R. & C.), some professors and colleagues.  She also took part in the

(2003).  9th International Facet Theory Association Annual Conference, Ljubljana (July 20-23, 2003), “An empirical example of comparison between the Multiple Correspondence Analysis and Smallest Space Analysis: the diffusion of the Social Representation Theory through the institutional context of scientific communication.” (Co-presentation with Prof. De Rosa ).

 Moreover, she has continued to co-operate with two research programs led by prof. Annamaria de Rosa, University La Sapienza of Rome, by tutoring undergraduate research trainees and carrying out quantitative and structural statistics. The first one is the Project of Meta-theoretical analysis of Social Representations literature, while the second one is the EuroSkyCompass research project, which focuses on Social Representations of European Union in the youth from nine European and extra-European Countries, European citizenship and integration (see the European PhD on S.R. and C. website www.europhd.psi.uniroma1.it). She also attended three weekly seminars at the EHESS:  “Modèles et recherches dans le champ des représentations socials” (Profs. Lage and Personnaz),  “Psychologie sociale et Politique” (Prof. Baugnet) and “Le soi, l’autre et l’objet comestible” (Prof. Lalhou).

As a research trainee enrolled in the Euro PhD on SR & C, she has participated to the Forum Discussions on EuroSkyCompass research project on the Euro PhD website, and introduced some bibliographic references in the database on SR literature.

 The fellow used the period of her fellowship to optimum advantage, and continues to perform research, publish and present her research in both international conferences and particularly in all of the events organised at the EuroPhD on S.R. & Com. Training structure in Rome, such as the International Lab Meetings and the International Summer Schools in which she has been an extremely active and enthusiastic participant.  She is currently employed on a temporary basis at the University of Rome “La Sapienza” where she continues her research and tutoring.  She is also in the final stages of completing her PhD.

During her fellowship Michelle Pieri worked on her PhD thesis “The Social Representations of new food: the Genetically Modified food (GMO) and the idea of Biological” under the supervision of Prof. Anna Maija Pirttila Backman (University of Helsinki). In particular the principal aim of the fellow’s work was exploring and interpreting the common sense images of the “new food”: genetically modified foods, biological foods and functional foods as they are held by university research trainees in Italy. During her fellowship she composed a questionnaire and she tested the same giving it to 31 Italian research trainees. The fellow analysed the numerical data with SPSS and she used Spad T for analysing the free associations to six stimulus words like: FOOD, GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOOD, BIOLOGICAL FOOD, FUNCTIONAL FOOD, ETHIC FOOD and ANTIETHIC FOOD. After collecting data she compared the common sense images of the “food” in general and the “new food” in particular as they are held by university research trainees in Italy with the social representations of “new food” in Finland.

While in Helsinki, the fellow concentrated mainly on methodological training (both quantitative and qualitative) and on the collection and analysis of bibliographical material concerning social representation theory, psychology of alimentation and a social representation approach to “food” in general and “new food” in particular.  The fellow presented her work to her colleagues in a formal presentation on 6^th May 2004 to share the knowledge gained and to receive interesting feedback for her future work.

Michelle Pieri also took part in some seminars organised by the University of Helsinki which offered advanced methodological and theoretical training. Before her fellowship, the fellow had participated in the 9th International Summer School of the European PhD on Social Representations & Communication" Communication Studies and Social Representations: a Theoretical and Metodological Dialogue through Research"Colonna Castle, Genazzano - Rome (ITALY), 7-16 June 2003. As Marie Curie Fellow, she also participated and presented her research in the 10^th International Summer School on Social Representation and Communication held in Colonna Castle, Genazzano - Rome - Italy from 24^th April 2004 to -3^rd May 2004.

At the end of her fellowship Michelle Pieri realised a poster “Le rappresentazioni sociali delle nuove tipologie di cibo (new food): i cibi geneticamente modificati (OGM) e l’idea del biologico”, and she presented the same at the VI Congresso Nazionale Sezione di Psicologia Sociale (22-24 –September, Sciacca - Agrigento - Italy).

During her fellowship Sanna Leppämäki worked on the theme of social representations of new and unfamiliar foods under the supervision of Dr. Saadi Lahlou (EDF) and prof. Elisabeth Lage (EHESS).

The fellow’s work approaches social representations in an experimental way. While in Paris the fellow planned and carried out experimental interviews in which adult subjects of different nationalities concretely encountered foods that were less familiar to them. The data collection was carried out by several methods: using new and conventional video techniques together with debrief interviews. Filming provides a way to capture and analyze the complex psycho-social phenomena of the human-food object encounter. While conventional the video camera gives an overall view of the situation from an outsider’s perspective, a new research tool, the subjective camera (miniature camera attached to the glasses worn by the person; Lahlou, 1999), gives the subject’s perspective of the situation by capturing what (s)he sees, hears and does. 

The fellow has been developing the use of this research tool which opens new possibilities to study the connections between people’s attention, representations, attitudes and action when faced with novelty objects. Specifically, the interest here was to study the contextual emergence of food related social representations at the level of speech and action; and how the anchoring processes, described by the theory as mechanisms in turning the unfamiliar into familiar, function in concrete micro-level situations. The other major target of analysis was the social side of these processes as the aspects of social influence proved to be central in the encounters. To gain further insight into these social processes the fellow carried out a small study on the novelty object encounter in a group situation, also based on video materials. On the basis of these studies, two papers were written and presented in the VII International Conference of Social Representations (Guadalajara, Mexico) in September 2004. 

In addition, Sanna Leppämäki used her time in collecting and going through bibliographical material on different aspects that come into play in human’s relation to food in its socio-cultural context. She also followed seminars at EHESS and at the University Paris V.  She also attended the following seminars at the EHESS: a Seminar on alimentation “Le soi, l’autre and l’objet comestible” at EHESS, by S. Lahlou and C. Fischler, a Seminar on environmental social psychology at Paris V, by G. During her Marie Curie fellowship (1.11.2003 - 1.9.2004) Satu Liimakka worked on her research project "Docile bodies, subversive bodies? Embodiment, spatiality and gender in Finland and Portugal" under the supervision of Prof. Ligia Amancio (ISCTE). The fellow’s work concentrates on the social construction of gender and the gendered power in embodiment and spatiality. Bodies are viewed in the research project as carriers of cultural ideas and ideologies. While in Lisbon, the fellow improved her research plan, and completed the theoretical and methodological framework in her research plan. In order to have a cultural perspective in her research, she collected various research materials in Lisbon. These research materials consist of focus group discussions, children’s drawings, observations in metro and observations in aerobics. Same research materials will be collected in Finland. The fellow aims to publish her research results in English-speaking international journals, so that a wider academic audience has access to this information.

The lively atmosphere of the Department of Social and Organisational Psychology in ISCTE provided the fellow with numerous opportunities to discuss the issue of gender from social psychological perspectives. In addition, Satu Liimakka developed valuable scientific contacts also outside ISCTE, in the areas of sport science and philosophy. She also used her time in Lisbon to collect bibliographical material.

During her Marie Curie Fellowship Satu Liimakka also took part in events in various international settings. She participated in two international summer schools: 1) 10^th International Summer School on Social Representation and Communication (24 June - 3 May 2004, Rome, Italy) and 2) Subjectivity, gender and politics: cross-disciplinary studies and methodological challenges (23 - 27 August 2004, Soro, Denmark). In the summer school in Rome she gave a presentation of her research project, and received valuable feedback. The summer school in Soro concentrated on the methodological and theoretical part of each participant’s research, and enabled her to discuss the analysis of the research materials she had collected in Lisbon. During his fellowship Tarek el Sehity worked on the development of methods to investigate the evolution of the semantic universe of social objects. He studied the establishment of a new currency and the disappearance of the old national currencies during the implementation period in 2001 and 2002 in ten European countries. Combining the theory of social representations with consolidated findings from cognitive psychology (studies on concepts and categorization) he developed a method to measure the semantic dimension.

While in Rome he studied the extensive literature on social representation available in The European Ph.D on S.R. & Com. Research Centre and Multimedia Lab, Rome and started to work reviewing the literature on the euro in collaboration with Prof. Annamaria de Rosa and dr.Cristina Gioiosa. The supportive and stimulating working atmosphere at the European Ph.D. Research Centre and Multimedia Lab enabled him to get acquainted with new methods in his research field. Stimulating scientific discussions throughout the year as well during the summer school he attended gave him the opportunity to establish contacts with researchers at international level.

He participated in the 10th International Summer School on Social Representation and Communication (24th April - 1^st Mai 2004, Rome), giving the presentation: The role of categories in the context of semantic phenomena in the social environment, and in the 9th International Summer School on Social Representation and Communication (7-16 June 2003, Rome), giving the presentation: “The Rise and Decline of Social Objects. During his fellowship Dino Numerato worked on his dissertation thesis Disenchanted media under the supervision of Prof. Gianni Losito (University of Rome “La Sapienza”). The year he spent in Rome contributed to the unique progression of his thesis both on the level of empirical and theoretical development.

As concerns the empirical advances, Dino Numerato realized qualitative and quantitative content analysis of the Czech media which forms the integral part of his empirical research and is now about to be published in Czech under the title Media about Media: Between Reflexivity and Self Reproduction in the proceedings of the conference “Challenges for Education toward Citizenship” that took place on May 2005 in Cˇeské Budeˇjovice (Czech Republic).  Dino Numerato also elaborated the methodological tool for audience analysis (focus groups scenario) which he created in the Czech Republic.

 As regards the theoretical development of his dissertation thesis, the experience of working closely with the theory of social representations transmitted through the means of conferences, seminars, meetings with leading professors in the field, and discussions with European Doctorate research trainees and Marie Curie Fellows enriched and strengthened the theoretical basis of his research. In addition, Dino Numerato used the year in Rome to collect bibliographical material, above all on theoretical explanations of the relationship between everyday and scientific knowledge, on reflexivity, on media education and on concept of active audience. Another output of Dino Numerato´s stay in Rome was the preparation of the undergraduate course “Expert knowledge in everyday life” that was given during the spring semester 2005 at the School of Social Studies at his home University in Brno.

As Marie Curie Fellow Euro PhD on SR & C he contributed to the project of meta-theoretical analysis of SR literature, analysing the book written in Slovak by Jana Plichtová called Metódy sociálnej psychológie zblízka: Kvalitatívne a kvantitatívne skúmanie sociálnych reprezentácií (in English: Close up to the Methodology of Social Psychology. Qualitative and Quantitave Examination of Social Representations).

The whole period provided Dino Numerato with a lot of time for publications which constitute an integral part of his thesis. He published two articles in Czech journal Revue pro média (Revue for Media) approaching the concept of active audience in media studies and phenomena of media education. Apart from this, he wrote a book review on Nico Stehr´s book The Fragility of Modern Societies which was published in the Czech social scientific journal Sociální studia, published by the Faculty of Social Sciences at Masaryk University in Brno.

As Marie Curie Fellow, he gave a presentation “Reflection of the Media: Disenchanting an Enchanted World” at 10th International Summer School on Social Representation and Communication (24th April - 3rd May 2004, Rome) and he participated online in the conference Social Representations in Action and Construction in Media and Society - The 1st International Lab Meeting on Social Representations and Communication. Moreover, the fellow attended the conference in Amsterdam on Science and Society with name Sharing Knowledge organised by Da Vinci Institute of Innovation and Transdisciplinary Research and gave a presentation at one of the workshops that was dedicated to scientific journalism.

Additionally, he took part in an intensive cycle of seminars Analisi Testuale at the Faculty of Psychology 2 (La Sapienza) that provided him with advanced methodological training in software for textual analysis, Lexico and SPAD and he took part in seminar Note sul post-umano with the opening lecture given by Prof. Alberto Abruzzese. In the last quarter of his fellowship, Dino Numerato participated in regular seminars with other Marie Curie Fellows and European Ph.D research trainees in the European PhD on Social Representations & Communication Multimedia LAB & Research Center.

During her fellowship Adriana Wyrobková worked on the research “Representation of gender categories in comparative perspective” under the supervision of Prof. Ligia Amancio (ISCTE in Lisbon). The fellow´s research, which is an integral part of her PhD thesis, is focused on the comparison of the images of women and men with respect to the superordinate category of human beings in two cultural backgrounds - Portugal and the Czech Republic.

In the first months of her fellowship, Adriana Wyrobková gathered bibliographical resources on social representations, psychology of gender and social psychology. To accomplish this goal, the fellow benefited from the access to the data bases of the libraries of ISCTE and other universities in Lisbon. Moreover the fellow obtained the methodological training in quantitative and qualitative analysis of social representations and was introduced to the relevant software used for this purpose. Information found and discussions with Prof. Ligia Amancio contributed considerably to the improvement and clarification of her research design, and development of an appropriate research tool - the word association questionnaire. Adriana Wyrobková furthermore collected the empirical data from 220 research trainees of management, human resources, and finances at ISCTE in Lisbon. The research carried out in Lisbon was to be analysed and followed up with the same study in the Czech Republic.

While in Lisbon, Adriana Wyrobková attended the “invited speaker” series for PhD research trainees and small PhD conferences on which the doctoral research projects were presented and discussed. As Marie Curie fellow Adriana Wyrobková participated in the 10^th International Summer School in Rome (April 24 - May 4, 2004). As a part of a workshop she presented the theoretical and empirical framework of her research project entitled “Representation of femininity and masculinity among young people” .

Moreover, the fellow presented her poster “Representation of gender categories in comparative perspective” at the EAESP summer school in Groningen (August 1 - 15, 2004). Participation in the scientific events provided the fellow with an intensive theoretical and methodological training and experience and lead to the exchange of ideas that stimulated her work.

In addition, Adriana Wyrobková prepared and published a 25-pages-article entitled:

During her first months of fellowship Eva Sobotka worked on the Social Representations of the Roma in Spain, Germany and the Central and Eastern Europe and studied the influence of international norms on changing the social representation of Roma.  She has been under the supervision of Prof. Jose Valencia (Universidad del Pais Vasco). The fellow’s work combines three case studies that aim at exploring and interpreting the common sense images of ‘Roma’ as they are held by policy makers. While in San Sebastian, the fellow concentrated mainly on qualitative methodological training and collected bibliographical material, above all on identity/social positioning and on theory of social representation.

During the three months of fellowship Passini Stefano worked on his PhD Thesis “Authoritarianism, values and responsibility”, under the supervision of Prof. Klaus Helkama (University of Helsinki). The principle aim of this study was to verify a theoretical model in which authoritarianism was related to values, relational styles and responsibility towards human rights. Moreover, the relationship between authoritarianism and religiosity was deepened, trying to better understand in which cases this relationship exists in a positive way. The possibility of having a confrontation with new methods of analysis and new theoretical backgrounds enabled the fellow to improve his knowledge on the themes analyzed in his research.

Furthermore, the fellow presented his work to his colleagues in a formal presentation in order to receive interesting feedback which was very important for the future of his work. During this presentation, the fellow started to deepen the theme of obedience and disobedience, in relation to the variables analyzed in his PhD study. In particular, he divided the participants into some discussion groups and he encouraged a comparison between these groups on the theme of obedience and disobedience. Based on the results of this discussion, the fellow developed a questionnaire focused on obedience, disobedience, authoritarianism, values and responsibility. The questionnaire was translated in Suomi and was distributed to 200 research trainees of the University of Helsinki.

In addition, Stefano Passini took part in seminars given by Prof. Helkama and Prof. Tarkkonen at the University of Helsinki, many of which offered advanced methodological and theoretical training.

During her fellowship, Carine Pianelli worked on the research project “Social Representations of speed and speed limits in driving” activated in cooperation with Prof. Jean-Claude Abric (France) and developed under the supervision of Prof. Annamaria de Rosa (Italy).  Therefore having the opportunity to work side by side with both of her tutors, and also to extend her research.

The fellow’s research consisted of studying how the practice of driving influences the social representations related to this object, mainly the social representations of speed and speed limit. A first study was carried out with 1000 drivers. The results of this study led to the development of new questions and thus to the modification of the questionnaire administred during this study. This questionnaire was finalized thanks to a series of interviews. The development of this new questionnaire had resulted in undertaking a second study carried out with 400 drivers.

The fellow' s research relates also to the experimentation of a new system of assistance in driving. At the theoretical level, the interest of this experimentation is to see how the use of this new object by the drivers will influence their social representations related to this object, and in particular the social representations of speed and of speed limit.

At the same time, the fellow collected bibliographical material to elaborate a review of the literature concerning the studies on driving but also on the work currently undertaken within the framework of the theory of the social representations.  She also participated in many workshops and seminars at the host University.

As Marie Curie Fellow, the fellow spent 12 months at the Social Psychology Department of the University of Helsinki, Finland, from April 2004 until the end of March 2005.  At the host University, the fellow worked under the supervision of  Professor Anna-Maija Pirrtilä-Backman, Head of the Department of Social Psychology. The fellow is enrolled in the Euro PhD in Social Representations and Communication under the supervision of Professor Annamaria Silvana de Rosa and her doctoral dissertation focuses on Social Representations of food biotechnologies in Italy. Her research looks at how folk theories and epistemologies of food biotechnologies are generated, modified and exchanged within Italian society through the medium of mass media communication and everyday conversations. The research is based on data taken from newspapers, advertisements, interviews with stakeholders (scientists, green activists, politicians) and ethnographic data taken from the in depth study of two cases of field experiments with genetically modified plants in Italy. The study gems from PARADYS, a three year EU funded International study on citizenship and biotechnologies to which the fellow contributed from 2001 to 2004.

The Department of Social Psychology at the University of Helsinki proved to be a state of the art, stimulating and open environment in which the fellow had the opportunity to discuss her research with peers and senior researchers and in which she was supported in the learning process of various software and research methodologies. She participated in post graduate seminars such as a weekly Seminar (two semesters) with (Prof. Pirttillä-Backman); an International Symposium on Universality and Diversity in Human Cognitive/Socio cognitive Development, 10 - 13 January 2005; Data Analysis1, course in quantitative data analysis, February 2005. (Dr. Solheim); and Social Justice and Prejudice, towards and Integration. Workshop 14-18 March 2005. (Prof. Staerklé). She also received constant feedback and suggestions on her writing and participated in several academic events.  Moreover, she taught a course in verbal interaction: Verbal Interaction. Qualitative analysis, methodological course (October-December 2004). University of Helsinki.

She dedicated the period of her fellowship to bibliographical research with the aim of Metanalysis, intensive study of the principles and methodologies of the Social Representations approach, finalization of the analysis of the corpus of data which will constitute the objective of her dissertation, training and self training in software for data analysis (Atlas t, SPSS, SPADt, HAMLET), beginning the composition of her doctoral dissertation and publications, conference participation.

During her fellowship Eleni Meliou worked on the function of AIDS prevention campaigns, seen from a communicative perspective, under the supervision of Professor Renata Metastasio, University of Sapienza, Rome.  Her work is a comparative study of two prevention campaigns held in France, in the year 2000, and in Greece, in the year 2003. By analysing the components of the campaign, (posters, advertising messages etc), the fellow’s research aims to better understand the way that the campaign works, as a system, and to propose interventions to enact solutions for prevention.

While in Rome, the fellow concentrated mainly on methodological training (qualitative) and on the analysis of previously collected data by semi- structured interviews. The supportive and stimulating work atmosphere at the laboratory enabled the fellow to analyse and interpret the bulk of qualitative data. The input of her colleagues’, giving her their point of view on several main themes of her analysis, helped the fellow not only to better analyse the collected data, but also to widen her horizons on other kinds of methodological issues in the social sciences.

In addition, Eleni Meliou used the six months in Rome to collect bibliographical material, above all on the social representations on AIDS and the intergroup relations. As a Marie Curie Fellow she took part on the 10^th International Summer School on Social Representations & Communication -  “Social influence and communication in the new scenarios of the information society: Is it possible to change the risk behaviour?” (24th April- 3^rd May 2004). Her presentation was entitled “ Paradoxes and Prospects of public communication campaigns”. Moreover, she attended the annual PhD conference at the University of Cambridge, (May 2005), organised by the department of the Social Psychology. The conference helped her to make good progress on the qualitative data during the following months.

During his fellowship Arnauld Fouquet worked on the Social Representations of Europe linked to the european and national identities under the supervision of Prof. Jose Valencia (UPV/EVU). In San Sebastian, he concentrated mainly on methodological training (both quantitative and qualitative) assisted by other fellows and his supervisor. Moreover, the fellow tried to analyse his previously collected data (Focus Groups, Newspapers content analysis, Questionnaires and Free associations). His work is made up of three parts: exploration and interpretation of the common sense images of ‘Europe’ through the newspapers; measures of the European and national identities of his population (membership of a specific conservative french political movement : CPNT) and the analysis of their Social Representations about Europe. The supportive and stimulating work atmosphere at the Universidad del Pais Vasco (UPV) enabled the fellow to analyse and interpret his qualitative and quantitative data. The contact he had with his colleagues (fellowships and spanish research trainees) enabled him to make good progress on the quantitative and qualitative data in the spring and summer months and to learn new methods of analysis. In particular, he discovered the software Evocation and Similitude (Vergès) through his spanish colleagues.

Finally, Arnauld Fouquet used his year in San Sebastian to collect bibliographical material, especially on European and national identities, intergroup relations, methods of analysis, and ideology. As Marie Curie Fellow, he participated in the 10^th International Summer School on Social Representation and Communication (24-3 April-May 2004, Rome) where he presented his research in the presentation: “The social representations of Europe through the press of the French political movement Chasse Pêche Nature & Traditions”

Name:  Hillevi SUNDHOLM

Hillevi Sundholm’s doctoral studies focus on collaborative work in augmented environments. During her fellowship she studied the collaboration in geographically distributed settings under supervision of Saadi Lahlou (Laboratoire de Psychologie Sociale et de l'Action, Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS)). The work was conducted at the Laboratory of Design for Cognition (LDC), at EDF R&D, Paris.  Some of the data has also been collected in Vienna and Stockholm. The fellow’s work combines two case studies, one conducted before coming to Paris and one that she has been conducting during the ten months at LDC. She has also made a minor complementary study to the main data collection in Paris, where she has been focusing on informal meetings on distance.

The supportive and stimulating work atmosphere at the LDC gave the fellow the opportunity to learn new data collection techniques, specially using the subjective camera (subcam) for capturing the first person view, and the 360° camera, which captures the 360° of the space. Theoretically she has deepened her knowledge and learned about Social Representation, Activity theory, Distributed Cognition and Cognitive Attractors. The fellow also has had the opportunity to meet researchers within her field from different labs around in Europe as well as in the United States, who have visited LDC, for instance: Jim Hollan, Ed Hutchins, Aaron Cicourel (all UCSD, San Diego), Volker Hartkopf (CMU, Pittsburgh) and Valery Nosulenko, (Laboratory of Professional Activity Support, Moscow).  She also took part in postgraduate seminars at the host University: Monthly international research seminar (April-January): Research on User-Friendly Augmented Environments (RUFAE), Monthly seminar at EHESS Interaction de sociales dans les espaces numériques (Saadi Lahlou, EDF R&D Claude Fischler, research directer at CNRS).

As Marie Curie Fellow, she participated in the 10^th International Summer School on Social Representation and Communication (24 April-3 May 2004, Genazzano, Rome), where she presented her research, and the 2005 series of 1^s, 2^nd, and 3^rd International. Lab Meetings at the European PhD on Social Representations & Communication Multimedia LAB & Research Center, Rome-Italy in combination with Worldwide on-line connection points, Rome, Italy,through which she learned how to use the videoconferencing system Marratech.

During 2004 she published two papers which she presented at the 6 ^th International Conference on the Design of Cooperative System (COOP 2004), French Riviera, 11-14 May 2004, and 1 ^st European Conference on Computers in Art and Design Education (CADE 2004), Copenhagen Business School, Denmark, and Malmö University, Sweden, 29 June - 1 July 2004.

She was also a co-author of two papers, one that was presented at the Kaleidoscope (NoE) CSCL-SIG symposium, 7-9 October 2004, Laussanne, Switzerland, and the other at the international conference on Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL 2005), Taipei, Taiwan, 30 May-4 June 2005. Moreover, she was invited to present her research at the Wallenberg Global learning Network Workshop and Symposium (WGLN 2004), Stockholm, Sweden, 24-25 October 2004, and twice she presented her ongoing work for the international network Research on User-Friendly Augmented Environments (RUFAE) on their monthly seminar (April and June).

She also took part in workshops abroad such as the Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI), 24-29 April 2004, Vienna, Austria.  She attended a tutorial on Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW). Name:  Raffaella BERARDI

During her fellowship Raffaella Berardi worked on the Social Representations of the female mental illness in Portugal.  The project was developed in Lisbon under the supervision of Prof. Ligia Amancio (I.S.C.T.E.).  Her research consists of an anthropological analysis of the origin of psychiatric hospitals in Portugal with the goal of making a comparative analysis between the psychiatric hospitals in France, Italy and Portugal.  Its aim is to demonstrate the social representations of mental illness in women by comparative research among different hospitals in these three European countries.  The fellow’s work examines the evolution towards a different perception of insanity, through developments in psychoanalytic theories and in identifying the origin of the psychiatric department.  In order to do this, she follows the developments in the structures of the Miguel Bombarda and Julio de Matos’s hospitals in Lisbon.  She examines the historical bases of their construction: their architecture, their structure, their physical layout.  References to these hospitals include maps and photographs.

The methodology is based on observation, survey research and on videos showing the structure and the architectural organisation of the hospitals and also the “places” reserved for women patients.  She took photos of ancient maps of these hospitals using different instruments: a video-camera, a photographic camera and a digital camera.

She collected bibliographical material from history, administration, interior politics of the hospitals and the identity of seclusion in Portugal.  In order to complete this study, it was necessary to have a certain knowledge of the Portuguese language, therefore she studied Portuguese at the French-Portuguese Institute in Lisbon and she earned a certificate (July 2004).

Moreover, she interviewed Dr. Alvaro Josè Beltrao da Luz e Silva in Julio de Matos hospital about history, administration, and the cultural activities of the hospital, as well as about his personal life at the hospital.

She took part in the 10 th International Summer School of the European PhD on Social Representations & Communication, Colonna Castle, Genazzano - Rome (Italy)24 th April -   3 rd May 2004 where she presented her research.  She also participated in the “European Anthropological Summit” at the I.C.S. - Social Sciences Institute - University of Lisbon (May 2004)

During the one-year period of her fellowship Zornitza Ganeva worked on her dissertation on the subject: “Prejudices and Stereotypes towards the Children from Ethnic Minority Groups: Roma, Turks, Jews, and Armenians, in the Republic of Bulgaria”, under the scholarly direction of Dr. José Valencia, Professor of Social Psychology at the Department of Social Psychology and methodology of behavioural sciences at the University of the Basque Country. The doctoral research trainee extended her knowledge of various theories such as the theory of social representations, the theory of social identity, and the theory of children’s development. She also worked on the methodological part of her dissertation by preparing a structured interview in order to investigate the categorisation and the subjective identification, the ethnic stereotypes and preferences, the social distance and self-assessment of children at the age of 6, 9, 12, and 15 years. It has been investigated how the children define their own and the other ethnic groups: Bulgarians, Turks, Jews, Armenians, and Roma. The stimulating, positive, and accepting atmosphere at the Department of Social Psychology was especially enriching and extended her personal, theoretical and professional horizons. Zornitza Ganeva collected bibliographic information that will help her in writing and elaborating her dissertation. Moreover, she participated as a listener in the following courses of the doctoral research trainee programme at the University of the Basque Country: “Culture, Identity, and Intergroup Relations”, Organisational Culture and Innovations in Knowledge”, Culture, Thinking, and Emotions” and “Culture and Migrational Movements”. In its turn, the meeting organised by Prof. José Valencia with Prof Wolfgang Wagner was very interesting and contributed to the clarification and development of the ideas that the doctoral research trainee will apply in her future investigation.  At the host University she also attended the following seminars: Third International Seminar “History and Philosophy of Social Sciences”, 22-24 April 2004, and “Emotional Climate”, 25-26 October 2004.

Zornitza Ganeva, under the direction of Dr. José Valencia and with the help of her national director of studies, performed an investigation, in Bulgaria, of the stereotypes of research trainees from the Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. Data collected was analysed and presented at the Conference “Interknow-Euro Workshop III” in Austria (10-13 November 2004) where she presented a paper on the subject: “The Role of Normative Regulations in the Relationship between Stereotypes and Prejudices towards Minority Groups: Comparison between Two Countries”.

The doctoral research trainee participated in a great number of conferences, seminars, and summer schools where she presented and discussed her doctoral thesis. As a Marie Curie fellow she participated in the

During the fellowship Maciej Sekerdej worked on his doctoral thesis at the University of the Basque Country, Donostia-San Sebastian, under the supervision of Prof. Jose Valencia. His research deals with the relationship between cultural (consensual) stereotypes and individual beliefs concerning the Jews. The author is trying to investigate the content of out-group stereotypes which are ‘agreed’ in certain societies and compare them with ‘personal’ stereotypes, in order to reveal to what extent a particular subject share the stereotype of his or her group. Moreover, the author would like to examine, using certain experimental conditions, the inter-impact between cultural stereotypes and individual beliefs and how they both depend on a specific context of presentation of the questioned out-group.

Working with Prof. Jose Valencia, the fellow tried to refine the methodology of his research. Moreover he dealt with the theoretical concepts which could be applied to analysis and interpretation of the empirical findings. Along with this, the fellow managed to conduct a pilot study and, on this, he designed the experiments to be done in the main stage of the investigation. Finally, the fellow used his year in San Sebastian to collect abundant literature on the relevant topics, taking advantage of the well-stocked library and a good many databases.

During her fellowship Cristina Gioiosa worked on the “Impact of media communication on stock exchange: traditional speculation and on-line trading” held by people who play on stock market as professionals or lay people in Italy under the supervision of Prof. Annamaria Silvana de Rosa (La Sapienza, Rome), Prof. Pierre Verges (MMSH, Aix–en-Provence), Prof. Eric Kirchler (Univerisity of Vienna, Wien). The research fellow’s work combines the analysis by Alceste of newspapers articles and an administration of questionnaires. The analysis of newspaper articles aims at exploring and interpreting the common sense and the scientific discourse around the Stock market via the article collected by two newspapers “La Repubblica” (a mainstream newspaper) and “Il sole 24 Ore” (an economic specialised newspaper) and the influence of particular key events on them. The administration of the questionnaire aims at investigating the influence on the different way to play on stock market of the Social Representation of internet, risk and stock market via the systems of practice of it (bank, via professionals, via Post or On-line), the investors attitude towards risk, time, norms and hazards, the influence of the communication towards the media of key events.  In Aix-en-Provence, the fellow concentrated mainly on methodological training (both quantitative and qualitative), on the analysis of previously collected data (Questionnaires and Associative Networks) with Evoc and Analyse of Similitude and on the theoretical background of the theory of graphs, the theory of central nucleus developed by the school of Aix.

She took part in a great number of seminars and workshops, from which several offered advanced methodological training, like the 1st and 2nd Iinternational Lab Meetings via web, organized by the University of Rome. As Marie Curie Fellow, she participated in the 11th International Summer School on Social Representation and Communication (24th April-3rd May 2004, Rome), where she presented her research.

Moreover, she presented a contribution on the research developed in collaboration with Prof. de Rosa on “Processi di Familiarizzazione in riferimento all’introduzione dell’Euro” at the “VI° Congresso Nazionale della Sezione di Psicologia Sociale dell'AIP” (Sciacca, 22-24 Settembre 2004) and another contribution on “Exploring the structure of Social Representations of the Euro via Facet theory approach and WSSA1 procedure” at the 10th Facet Theory International Conference, Rome, from the 10th to the 13th of July 2005 that led to a publication, on “Facet theory: Design, Analysis and Application”. 

As research trainee enrolled in the Euro PhD on SR & C, she participated to the Forum Discussion on the Euro PhD website, and introduced some bibliographic references to the database on SR literature, that she should still meta-analyze.

Before entering into her fellowship, she had taken part in the 8^th, 9^th and 10^th 9th  International Summer School of the European PhD on Social Representations & Communication which took place at Colonna Castle, Genazzano - Rome (ITALY), 7-16 June 2003, and she has continued to actively take part in all the events organized by the EuroPhd on S.R. & Com since.

During his fellowship Andrea Davolo worked on the “Social Representations of the Rights of the Migrants and migratory policies” under the supervision of Prof. Jose Valencia (Universidad del País Vasco, San Sebastian). During this period, the fellow improved his research tools, particularly the questionnaire and a scale for the investigation of the representational field of the rights of the migrants in the Italian social context. For this purpose, the fellow administered a series of scales in order to validate them. The fellow followed a pertinent methodological training on the scaling procedures and analysis of previously collected data. On the basis of this work, the fellow is in the process of writing an article.

The fellow also deepened his bibliographical knowledge, acquiring an interdisciplinary knowledge (social psychology, sociology, political philosophy, political science, history and jurisprudence) about the topic of his PhD thesis. Using this literature, a chapter, that will be part of his PhD thesis, has been written. An intense exchange of ideas with Prof. Jose Valencia and Prof. Dario Paez contributed to the clarification of the ideas that the fellow argues for in his research.

The fellow took part in different seminars and workshops like: the seminar about “Everyday Knowledge and Social Representations: the Common Sense” (December 17^th-18^th 2004) held by Prof. Wolfgang Wagner in San Sebastian, that offered a theoretical deepening of a classical theme of the Social Representational Theory, a series of classes about “Culture and Knowledge” held by Prof. Dario Paez (March 2005), that enriched the fellow’s scientific knowledge about the Cross-Cultural Psychology, the 2^nd International Lab Meeting via web (April 28^th - May 8^th 2005) organized by the EuroPhD on S.R. & Com., which offered an advanced methodological training about “the image-based research methods for analysing Social Representations”, and the 11th International Summer School on Social Representation and Communication (July 2^nd - 10^th 2005) in Rome, that offered a theoretical and methodological training about the Facet Theory and the use of the Hudap statistical package.

Davolo A. (2005) 7^th European Regional Congress of Cross-Cultural Psychology (July 11^th - 15^th 2005, San Sebastian) where he presented the paper “Social Representations of a multicultural society”.

As research trainee enrolled in the European PhD on SR & C, the fellow participated to the Forum Discussion on the Euro PhD website, and meta -analyzed 12 bibliographic references added to the database on SR literature, thanks to the specific training received by the scientific coordinator of the European Ph.D. on S.R. & C. prof. Annamaria de Rosa.

During her Marie Curie fellowship at La Sapienza (Rome) under the supervision of Professor de Rosa, the fellow made considerable progress in PhD research.  She completed the results chapters of her thesis, confirmed her thesis title, and selected the thesis committee. In addition, she conducted further research, namely an internet survey comprising a free associations task. Findings of this task have been analysed, data was triangulated, and she is currently in the process of writing up the results. Although gaining familiarity with the associative network technique developed by de Rosa during her fellowship, after discussion with my main doctoral supervisor, she chose to conduct a correspondence analysis for this part of the research, as it was more in line with her previous research approaches (such as ALCESTE).

Before beginning her fellowship she participated in the 10 th International Summer School of the European PhD on

Social Representations & Communication, Colonna Castle, Genazzano - Rome (Italy), 24 th April - 3 rd May 2004.  During her fellowship she continued to participate in the events organized at the EuroPhD on S.R. & Com Research Centre and Multimedia Lab in Rome

She presented and discussed her work in the lab seminars, where she received constructive comments and valuable suggestions. Furthermore, she participated in the 1^st International Lab Meeting (Rome, January 2005), receiving basic and advanced training in the Marratech Software. At the 2^nd International Lab Meeting (Rome, April/May 2005), she participated in lectures, seminars and workshops, and gave a presentation entitled: Lay perceptions of GM food risk: Images of ‘messing with nature’. She took part in International PhD seminars in Rome headed by Prof. Annamaria de Rosa, with invited guest professors such as Prof. Serge Moscovici. Presentation of own work, other research trainees ‘ work, and selected papers, followed by in-depth discussion and contructive critique.

She presented her work (The role of nature in risk perception and risk communication of GM foods).at the first conference of the NTA1 (Network for Technology Assessment) Technology in a fragile world, held in Berlin, Germany, in November 2004. For this, she also compiled a written conference report, which is at present awaiting publication[1]. Also, an abstract for a further conference (the 6^th Biennial Conference on Environmental Psychology in Bochum, Germany, September 2005) has been submitted.

She also designed her personal webpage (under construction), and learned basic Italian and a lot about Italian culture, which she considers to be very important for potential future EU collaborations and employment opportunities.

During her Marie Curie fellowship Mrs. Janine Bosak stayed at the Department of Social and Political Sciences of the University of Cambridge, UK, under the supervision of Dr. Gerard Duveen. Mrs Bosak worked on the Social Representations of Gender and their impact on other people’s perception of men and women as well as their influence on women’s self-perception especially in the area of leadership roles.

In general, the fellow’s work focuses on the perceived masculinity of management positions and consequences for women associated with the phenomenom. Together with Sabine Sczesny (Mrs. Bosak’s German Supervisor), Mrs Bosak investigates people’s perception of male and female leaders and explored cultural variations of managerial gender typing which led so far to a publication in the Journal Sex Roles (Sczesny, S., Bosak, J., Neff, D. & Schyns, B. (2004). Gender Stereotypes and the Attribution of Leadership Traits: A Cross-Cultural Comparison. Sex Roles, 51 (11-12), 631-645). Mrs. Bosak also gave a formal presentation of her research in Dr. Gerard Duveen’s seminar on ‘Philosophical and Methodological Issues in Psychological Research’ to research trainees of the Mphil program and interested faculty members where she gained invaluable feedback with regard to future research plans. In general, Mrs. Bosak perceived the atmosphere in the Department as very stimulating. Dr. Gerard Duveen, in particular, was very supportive. He even established contact with Dr. David Good (University of Cambridge) which allowed Mrs. Bosak to work together with him and Sarah Cooper (University of Strathclyde) in a project on the evaluation of the MEETS program (Mid-career Education in Entrepreneurship and Innovation for Technology and Science) designed to increase female entrepreneurs’ self-efficacy and to enable women to assume leadership roles. Mrs. Bosak designed the questionnaires and ran a preliminary analysis of the gathered data. Finally, Mrs. Bosak pursued her project with Prof. Dr. Alice Eagly of the Northwestern University, Chicago/USA. Alice Eagly is one of the leading authorities in the research on gender and Mrs. Bosak attended her lab from January to October 2004. The project involves examining the role of shifting standards in judgements of women and men in roles. The research intends to clarify the scope of the effects of both shifting standards and social roles.

In addition, Janine Bosak took part in a great number of seminars and workshops. She especially benefited from the discussed diversity of methodolocial approaches. As Marie Curie Fellow, she participated in the 1st International European Ph.D. Lab Meeting on ‘Social Representations in Action and and Construction in Media and Society’ (January, 22-30, 2005) which provided her with the opportunity to communicate with other Marie Curie Fellows and experts in Social Representations like Prof. Serge Moscovici. Mrs. Bosak also attended the 6^th Inter-University Graduate Conference in Cambridge where she presented her research.

She was invited to give a presentation of  her research on “Geschlechtsstereotypes Urteilen - Folge sozialer Rollen und geschlechtsspezifischer Standards?” (Gender-stereotypical judgment processes: A consequence of social roles and gender-specific standards?) at the following conference: “Tagung experimentell arbeitender Psychologen (TeaP; Meeting of Experimental Psychologists)” held in April, 4-6, 2005 in Regensburg, Germany.

Furthermore, besides her research activities, Mrs. Bosak gave supervision classes for research trainees in their second year of psychology. In Lent Term and Easter Term, Mrs. Bosak supervised and taught on important topics in social psychology (e.g., intergroup relations, attributions). Finally, Mrs. Bosak, with other Ph.D. research trainees, organised the 6^th Inter-University Graduate Conference held in Cambridge, May 21, 2005.
