HOW TO USE THE DATA ENTRY TOOL FOR THE EUROSKYCOMPASS STUDY
(de Rosa, 2002).
In order to make the procedures for correct data entry clearer, we are providing a sample EUROSKYCOMPASS questionnaire completed by a hypothetical subject, including the special instructions to enter data using this tool.
Please follow very carefully all instructions provided.
All data entered must be true and accurate. Each user is responsible for the information he/she enters. Data entry is an essential part of the evaluation of the work performed by each user. In order to guarantee the quality of the research, cross-checks of paper copies and on-line coding will be performed.
To access the database, you must click on the CO-OPERATIVE RESEARCH ON LINE icon found on the homepage of EuroPhD website, than you will choise EUROSKYCOMPASS and, last, DATA ENTRY; www.europhd.psi.uniroma1.it. A window will appear with fields in which to enter your personal login and password. A new window will then appear which contains information concerning the interviewer. You have the possibility of viewing the list of questionnaires already coded as well as returning to the preceding window.
In addition to a schematic summary of the interviewer's production and the above mentioned list of already entered questionnaires, in the next window (QUESTIONNAIRE LIST) you will find : Log Out - used in order to return to the previous window and to end the connection while safeguarding data entered against possible modification by others and ADD - used to enter new records. By clicking on ADD it is possible to view all fields to be filled in codifying the questionnaire.
QUESTIONNAIRE NUMBER: in this field insert the code originally assigned for each questionnaire. For example: FP015 for the 15th questionnaire administered in Paris.
Once you have entered the code, to activate the subsequent fields and be able to enter the relevant data, you must either hit the SEND key or click on UPDATE.
The fields labelled KEYWORD: NATION (Q.A 1,2,3), KEYWORD: EUROPE (Q.A 1,2,3), KEYWORD: WORLD (Q.A 1,2,3) concern the three associative networks presented in Section A of the questionnaire.
In each of these three cases, you can access a new window by clicking on the "+" sign located in the centre of the field.
In this window it is possible to first enter the list of all words, in the mother tongue and in English, elicited by the stimulus word with the elicitation number associated with it and the sign indicating its valence. It is possible to save this first set of information entered for each word by clicking on UPDATE or, in case of an error, to erase it by clicking on DELETE.
To add a new line in which to enter information relative to a new evoked word, you only have to click on the ADD EMPTY ROW button.
Then you can proceed to introduce the ramifications and the links associated with each evoked word.
To do this it is sufficient to click on ADD EMPTY ROW in the RAMIFICATION column that corresponds to the word that presents a ramification and that, among the words that are found on that ramification, presents the lowest elicitation order number.
Once you have obtained a new field, it is possible to enter the word into it. If there are others, by clicking the ADD EMPTY ROW button found each time below, you can insert all necessary words respecting an ascending order based on the number of elicitations for these words.
Obviously, it is necessary to click on UPDATE to save each word entered.
The same procedure is used to add the links that each evoked word presents.
After finishing the insertion of all words in the mother tongue and in English, with related elicitation order numbers, valence signs, ramifications and links, you can return to thequestionnaire by clicking on RETURN TO QUESTIONNAIRE PAGE , found at the bottom of the page.
Once the fields relating to the three associative networks have been filled in, you can move on to Section B of the questionnaire, which consists of questions related to EUROSKYCOMPASS. This is the tool that gave the entire research project its name.
In the fields related to question B1 and B2 which is associated to it, you can enter, in both the mother tongue and in English, words associated to each cardinal point and the relative valence signs.
The fields related to questions B3, B4, B5, B6, however, should be used to define the position on the skycompass of each of the elements under consideration (ME, MY COUNTRY, MY FAVOURITE COUNTRY, EUROPE).
For this purpose, the EUROSKYCOMPASS should be considered a plane of Cartesian axes. Therefore, choosing from among the alternatives expected for each of the two fields, you indicate the reference quadrant, the cardinal point in ordinate and abscissa ssociated with the point selected by the subject and, by inserting the associated value for each of the two cardinal points in the two adjacent fields, the exact position in that quadrant.
The value is identified by superimposing the special transparency provided to all interviewers for measuring positions on EUROSKYCOMPASS over the image on the questionnaire.
In the case of question B5, the field relative to the favorite country, you only have to select a field chosen from among those already provided in the relevant list.
You will note that located immediately following these questions is the field used for entering the answer to question C7.
Section C.
For question C1 of the questionnaire, for each of the four quadrants indicated by the subject it will be sufficient to select the countries that are included, based on the design the subject produced.
In the case of countries that straddle more than one quadrant, these will be selected as present in all the quadrants involved.
In this case as well, the special transparency that was provided to all the interviewers will be used.
For question C2 each time you choose the name of the country of interest choosing from those on the prepared list of names. In the adjacent field you select the score that was attributed to it.
In the case of questions C3-C9, you only have to select the name of countries that each time are considered interesting, keeping track of the order indicated by the subject.
For question C10 you select the value of the scale attributed to each country.
We've now arrived at Section D of the questionnaire.
To fill in the fields in this section, where possible you must select the responses chosen and type them in the remaining fields that do not require predetermined responses. At the end, to save the work completed you must click on the UPDATE button.
If later it becomes necessary to modify the record entered, once you have requested the list of entered questionnaires you can click on DISPLAY and EDIT in the first window (QUESTIONNAIRE LIST).
For now, GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR WORK!
